Toyota And Lexus Announces Safety Recall For 858 Vehicles Due To Fuel Pump Defect
Toyota Motor has issued a voluntary recall for 858 Toyota and Lexus vehicles from the 2018 and 2019 model years due to a fuel pump defect that could cause engine stalling. The recall affects specific units of the Toyota Camry, Lexus NX300, and Lexus RX350L.
2019 Lexus NX300
Affected Vehicles
- 2018 Toyota Camry (Produced between February 1, 2018, and April 6, 2018)
- 2019 Lexus NX300 (Produced on April 22, 2019)
- 2019 Lexus RX350L (Produced on August 2, 2019)
According to the report filed by Toyota to NHTSA approximately 1% of the recalled vehicles may have the defect. However, due to data processing errors.
Nature of the Defect
The affected vehicles contain fuel pumps with impellers manufactured with lower density. If these impellers have either:
1. Lower surface strength.
2. Been exposed to extended solvent drying periods during production.
they may develop surface cracks, leading to excessive fuel absorption and deformation. In severe cases, the impeller can interfere with the fuel pump body, causing the pump to fail.
Investigation Timeline
Toyota initially reported the defect in January 2020 under recall number 20V012. However, between May and August 2024, field reports from Japan indicated similar fuel pump failures. Investigations revealed that some affected vehicles had not been included in the original recall due to supplier data errors. By January 15, 2025, Toyota confirmed that certain models required an additional recall and decided to proceed with a voluntary safety campaign.
Remedy and Notification
To deal with the issue Toyota and Lexus dealers will replace the defective fuel pump assembly with an improved version at no cost to owners. Vehicle owners who previously paid for repairs may seek reimbursement under Toyota’s General Reimbursement Plan.
- Dealer notifications began on January 22, 2025
- Owner notifications will take place between March 9 and March 23, 2025
