Toyota Launches Initiative To Recycle And Reuse End-Of-Life Vehicle Components

Toyota Motor Europe has launched the Toyota Circular Factory, with the first facility at its Burnaston plant in the UK, to recycle end-of-life vehicles. The initiative will focus on reusing vehicle parts, remanufacturing commodity items, and recycling raw materials to reduce the environmental impact of vehicle manufacturing. The UK facility aims to recycle 10,000 vehicles annually, recovering valuable materials and giving new life to reusable parts.

Toyota Launches Initiative To Recycle And Reuse End-Of-Life Vehicle Components

Toyota Motor Europe (TME) has announced the establishment of the Toyota Circular Factory to process end-of-life vehicles. The first facility will begin operations in the third quarter of this year at Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK (TMUK)’s Burnaston plant. This facility will operate alongside the production of Toyota Corolla vehicles at the site.
The initiative focuses on three areas: reusing vehicle parts, remanufacturing commodity items, and recycling raw materials. Reusable parts will be identified and distributed through retailers or distributors after validation. Commodity items such as batteries and wheels will be assessed for remanufacturing, repurposing, or recycling. Raw materials, including copper, aluminium, steel, and plastic, will be recovered and used in the production of new vehicle components.
Toyota Motor Europe has set targets to achieve carbon neutrality in its owned facilities by 2030 and aims for a complete CO2 reduction across its European product lineup by 2035. The Toyota Circular Factory is part of its broader plan to reduce the environmental impact of vehicle manufacturing.
Leon van der Merwe, Vice President of Circular Economy at Toyota Motor Europe, "We initially anticipate recycling around 10,000 vehicles a year in our UK facility, which will give new life to 120,000 parts, recover 300 tonnes of high purity plastic and 8,200 tonnes of steel - amongst other materials. As a next step for the Toyota Circular Factory concept, we plan to roll out similar operations across Europe. And we’re not stopping at our own facilities - we are eager to collaborate with other organisations who share our passion of circularity and commitment to carbon neutrality".
