Production
The XC60 was initially manufactured only in Europe. Later, production expanded to China, making it the first global Volvo model to be built in both regions. The model is currently produced at Volvo’s facilities in Torslanda, Sweden, and Chengdu, China.
PHEV Variant
In 2023, the XC60 plug-in hybrid was the top-selling vehicle in its category across Europe. According to Volvo’s global data, around 48 percent of the distance driven in its plug-in hybrid models was powered solely by electricity.
2026 Model Year Update
The XC60 has received a model year update for 2026. The changes include revisions to the design, user interface, comfort features, and the in-car infotainment system.
The XC60 builds on a set of safety features that were previously seen in the Volvo 240. The 240 introduced a reinforced body, front and rear crumple zones, and one of the first integrated booster cushions in 1978.
The XC60 introduced systems like City Safety in 2008, which applied automatic braking at low speeds. In 2017, it added Oncoming Lane Mitigation, a steering correction system for head-on lane departures. Both features have since been adopted in other models across the industry.
UK Sales
In the UK, more than 160,000 XC60 units have been sold since 2008. In 2024 alone, 12,810 units were recorded. The earlier Volvo 240 series had sold over 2,40,000 units in the UK between 1975 and the early 1990s. Among these, 1,12,921 were of the 244 variant and 1,27,786 were of the 245. The best individual year for the 244 was 1979 with 13,372 units, and for the 245 it was 1984 with 12,404 units.
Transition to Electrification
Volvo Cars plans to continue using the XC60 and other updated models to support its shift toward electrified powertrains. The company states that the current hybrid models are contributing to the gradual phase-out of internal combustion-only vehicles.
Management’s Viewpoint
Susanne Hagglund, head of Global Offer at Volvo Cars said, "Growing up in Sweden in the 1980s, the Volvo 240 was the iconic family car – you could spot one in almost every driveway. Today the XC60 has taken over that position in two ways. Not only as the family favourite, but also becoming our all-time top-seller, which in itself is the ultimate proof point of a successful car. And now, with the latest updates, it gets even better."
