Volkswagen Reveals Plans For Entry-Level EV & Wolfsburg Plant's Electric Transition
German automaker Volkswagen has shared details about its upcoming entry-level electric vehicle during a works meeting in Wolfsburg. The company shared that the model is expected to be priced around €20,000 (approximately). It was previewed to employees and is scheduled to make its debut as a show car in March with the production version of the same expected to be introduced in 2027.
Thomas Schafer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, stated that the vehicle is being designed to meet mobility requirements in Europe. Daniela Cavallo, Chairperson of the General and Group Works Council, noted that the Wolfsburg workforce was the first to see the design ahead of its public debut.
New Electric Vehicle Additions
The entry-level model will be part of Volkswagen's small electric car range, which also includes the ID.2 all. This model is expected to reach dealerships in 2026 at a base price of less than €25,000. These vehicles are being developed using an updated version of the modular electric drive platform.
Since 2019, Volkswagen has sold over 1.35 million electric vehicles under its ID. product line, with 5,00,000 ID.3 units included in the total. In 2023, the company reported sales of 3,83,100 all-electric vehicles.
Wolfsburg’s Facility
Volkswagen has confirmed that the Wolfsburg facility will continue to be a key production site. Plans include using Hall 54 for updated production processes and manufacturing new electric models like the successor to the Golf and the electric T-Roc. These vehicles will be built on the new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which will serve as the basis for future all-electric models.
Cavallo explained that the Wolfsburg plant will handle technical development and production tasks, focusing on electric vehicle production for the next few years. The plant is expected to manufacture large volumes of the electric Golf and T-Roc, continuing its role in Volkswagen’s operations.
Volkswagen’s December 2024 “Zukunft Volkswagen” agreement outlined a three-stage plan for its passenger car brand:
- Catch Up: Improving competitiveness through cost and portfolio adjustments.
- Attack: Introducing nine new models by 2027, including the ID. 2all and the new entry-level electric car.
- Lead: Establishing the brand as a key global player in electric mobility by 2030.
