Yamaha XSR 155 Road Test Review: Retro Charm Marries Modern Performance

The Yamaha XSR 155 blends old-school design with proven performance from the R15 and MT-15. Priced aggressively, it promises style without sacrificing sportiness. But does this retro-modern motorcycle deliver beyond the visual appeal? Here’s a detailed look at what works — and what doesn’t.

The Yamaha XSR 155 has finally made its way to India, and it enters a segment that values personality as much as performance. This motorcycle is not just about nostalgia. Underneath the retro bodywork lies familiar, proven mechanicals and with an introductory price tag of Rs 1.5 lakh (ex-showroom), it positions itself smartly. But will the ownership experience feel as special as the R15 or the MT-15? We spent a week with it to find out.

Yamaha XSR 155 Road Test Review: Design – Retro Done Right

The biggest talking point here is the design. The XSR 155 carries a proper neo-retro aesthetic. It doesn’t feel forced or gimmicky.
Up front, you get a round LED headlamp that sets the tone immediately. The round digital instrument cluster complements it well, maintaining the retro theme while delivering modern information. At the rear, a clean, round LED tail lamp completes the look.
The tear-drop shaped fuel tank with a flat upper surface is beautifully executed. It not only looks good but also allows solid leg grip while riding. The single stepped seat keeps the proportions clean and uncluttered. However, it is the metallic blue shade with golden upside-down forks that stands out the most. It gives the bike presence and makes it instantly recognisable on the road.
That said, there are a few chinks in the armour. The engine area looks slightly cluttered, with exposed tubing and visible wiring. When you compare it to the cleaner, blacked-out presentation on the Yamaha MT-15 or the faired finish of the Yamaha R15, the difference is noticeable. It doesn’t ruin the design, but it does break the visual flow.

Yamaha XSR 155 Road Test Review: Ergonomics – Sporty Intent is Clear

The XSR 155 has an 810 mm seat height. Riders above roughly 5’6” will be able to flat-foot comfortably. Shorter riders may need to adjust slightly.
The riding posture strikes a balance between upright and sporty. There is a slight lean forward, but it never feels extreme. The handlebar is flat and subtly raised at the ends, offering good leverage and control.
Footpegs are positioned in a mildly rear-set manner, encouraging a sportier stance. Combined with the tank design, which allows proper knee lock, the overall setup feels connected and confident.
This is not a relaxed cruiser-style motorcycle. It is clearly tuned for riders who enjoy a slightly committed posture. For daily commutes and short weekend rides, it works well. For long-distance relaxed touring, seat cushioning could feel firm over time.

Yamaha XSR 155 Review: Features – Modern Core, Classic Face

Despite the retro styling, the feature list is modern.
The round digital instrument cluster uses a negative-lit display. It looks clean and premium, though visibility under harsh sunlight can be slightly compromised. Traction control is available and can be switched off via the cluster controls. That is a strong addition in this segment.
Lighting is fully LED, and the illumination spread at night is impressive. The slip and assist clutch is extremely light. In city traffic, this makes a noticeable difference. The 6-speed gearbox is smooth and precise. There is no quick shifter, but honestly, it doesn’t feel necessary given how clean the shifts are.

Yamaha XSR 155 Review: Performance – Familiar, Still Exciting

Under the tank sits the same 155 cc liquid-cooled engine seen on the Yamaha R15 and MT-15. It is paired with the Deltabox frame, which has already proven its capability.
In city conditions, the engine feels calm up to around 4000 rpm. It is smooth, tractable and easy to manage in traffic. Between 4000 and 7000 rpm, the power builds progressively.
Cross 7000 rpm and the Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) system comes alive. The engine’s character changes noticeably. It feels more eager, more responsive and significantly more entertaining. That top-end surge is where the XSR 155 truly shows its sporty DNA.
At 137 kg (with oil and full tank), the bike feels light and agile. In traffic, it is easy to filter through gaps. On open stretches, it remains stable and planted. The gearbox complements the engine well. No hesitation, no lag, just clean shifts.

Yamaha XSR 155 Review: Ride & Handling – Sport Bias Evident

The suspension setup leans towards the firmer side. It is tuned more for stability and control than plush comfort.
At higher speeds, especially over mildly broken roads, the bike feels composed. It does not bounce around or feel unsettled. However, if you are expecting soft, absorbent suspension for relaxed cruising, this is not that motorcycle.
Braking performance is strong and progressive. The feedback is predictable, and ABS works seamlessly without feeling intrusive. The tyres offer solid grip, adding confidence during hard braking and cornering.

Yamaha XSR 155 Review: Verdict – Style Meets Substance

The Yamaha XSR 155 is not just about looking good outside cafés. It carries genuine performance credentials. It is light, agile, responsive and entertaining once you push it past mid-range revs. The clutch is city-friendly, the gearbox is slick and the VVA kick keeps things exciting.
At ₹1.5 lakh (ex-showroom, introductory), the XSR 155 undercuts the R15 by roughly ₹20,000 while offering essentially the same engine and chassis performance. That makes it a compelling proposition.
There are minor issues — switchgear layout quirks, slightly firm seat padding, and some exposed wiring that affects visual cleanliness. But none of these are deal-breakers.
If you prioritise comfort above all else, there are softer options in the market. But if you want retro styling backed by sporty intent and proven Yamaha engineering, the XSR 155 makes a strong case for itself.
