400 Projects In Progress To Convert 'Parali' To Bio Fuel: Nitin Gadkari At Times Green Conclave & Awards 2024

Burning crop stubble and other pollution sources deteriorate the air quality over north India every year. Addressing the 2024 Times Drive Green Conclave and Awards, Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, highlighted a solution to this problem. He said that across India, there are currently 400 ongoing projects focused on converting Parali, or crop stubble, into biofuel.
Becoming a local producer of alternative fuels, such as biofuel, will help not only create a solution to crop stubble burning but also reduce India's dependence on fossil fuel imports. Besides biofuel, made from biomass, the minister also mentioned Hydrogen as the fuel of the future. He mentioned driving to the event in a flex-fuel vehicle, the Toyota Innova Flex Fuel.
Nitin Gadkari also mentioned that there is enormous scope for various municipal corporations in India to generate biofuel by converting a city's garbage into biomass. He also noted that he has plans to run all municipal corporation vehicles on biofuel.
Gadkari emphasised the government's commitment to promoting sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions. Additionally, Gadkari highlighted that flex-fuel vehicles can run on a blend of petrol and ethanol, reducing dependence on fossil fuel-run vehicles and mitigating carbon emissions. Moreover, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways stated that it costs the country approximately Rs 22 lakh crore to import fossil fuels, which can be mitigated if vehicles run on flex fuel and biofuel.
