Continental To Rename Automotive Division As Aumovio, Eyes China Growth
At the Auto Shanghai 2025 event, Continental revealed that its Automotive group sector will operate under a new name 'Aumovio'. The decision marks a shift as the company prepares to focus more on software-based and autonomous vehicle technologies. The Automotive division currently employs around 92,000 people worldwide and recorded €19.4 billion in sales in 2024.
The name change is expected to be approved at Continental’s Annual Shareholders’ Meeting on April 25, 2025. Aumovio is set to be listed separately on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange by September 2025.
Focus on China and Local Strategy
Continental has maintained a presence in China for three decades and employs about 10,000 people in the country. In 2024, the company’s Automotive division generated roughly 14% of its global revenue in China.
China remains the world’s largest auto market. The company has adopted a local approach—manufacturing, supply chains, and R&D are all handled within China to support both domestic and global carmakers. At Auto Shanghai, the company highlighted its focus on local innovations, including the Luna and Astra driver assistance systems developed through a joint venture with Horizon Robotics.
Philipp von Hirschheydt, Member of the Executive Board of Continental and CEO of Automotive, said, "As an independent company, we gain significantly more creative power and speed. Aumovio will be characterized by a triad of technologically leading products, a consistent value creation strategy and a global synergetic network, combined with a strong local presence for our customers. Our aim is to further expand our position in the future fields and growth markets of mobility. This strategy is particularly evident in China. Among other things, we are relying on our strong local presence by producing and developing locally for the Chinese market."
Mobility Products and Future Outlook
As Aumovio, the company will continue offering electronic and mobility solutions. These include sensor technologies, braking systems, displays, and comfort systems. It will also develop software platforms and vehicle architecture for software-defined and autonomous vehicles.
A study by Berylls suggests the value of such systems per vehicle may rise at an average rate of 4.7% annually until 2029. This growth is expected to outpace the global production of passenger and light commercial vehicles.
