Delhi-Dehradun Expressway To Be Inaugurated In Next 15 To 20 Days Says Nitin Gadkari At IEC 2024
On the second day of the 10th edition of the Times Network India Economic Conclave, held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India, participated in a fireside chat on the topic "How to Speed Up Infra Development." During the discussion, he announced that the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi within the next 15 to 20 days.
In his address, Gadkari shared that two phases of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway have been completed. The expressway has been designed to reduce the travel time between Delhi and Dehradun to just two hours. Officially known as the Delhi-Saharanpur-Dehradun Expressway, this National Highway Authority of India (NHAI)-approved project spans 210 km and is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 13,000 crore.
The expressway is being constructed in four phases:
- Phase 1: Begins at Delhi's Akshardham Temple and connects to the Eastern Peripheral Expressway in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh.
- Phase 2: Extends from Baghpat to the Saharanpur Bypass in Uttar Pradesh.
- Phase 3: Starts at the Saharanpur Bypass and links Ganeshpur (near Sunderpur) in Uttarakhand to Biharigarh.
- Phase 4: Connects Ganeshpur to Dehradun.
Gadkari also emphasized the government is building 36 green express highways (Delhi- Mumbai, Delhi-Srinagar, Delhi- Manal, Bengaluru-Chennai and more) across India . He explained, that these green express highways are expected to significantly impact the country's economic development by reducing logistics costs. Currently, logistics costs in India stand at 14-16% of GDP, compared to 8% in China and 12% in the United States and European countries. The government is aiming to bring India's logistics costs down to single digits, around 9%. Achieving this reduction is projected to boost exports by 1.5 times, thanks to increased cost efficiency.
