The standard equipment list includes a Rizoma fuel cap, brake and clutch levers with oil reservoirs, and a Termignoni silencer developed for the motorcycle. The racing motorcycle was ridden by Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari to victory at the 1972 200 Miglia di Imola. The 750 Super Sport Desmo was the first Ducati road motorcycle to feature a desmodromic valve timing system. The Imola victory also marked an important point in Ducati's production-derived racing programme.

The Formula 73 continues this connection with the brand's racing history through its design and mechanical configuration. The motorcycle also features in A Piece of Timeless, a short film starring Italian actor and Ducati enthusiast Stefano Accorsi.
