Hyundai, Pertamina Plan Waste-To-Hydrogen Project In Indonesia’s West Java

Hyundai Motor Group, in partnership with Pertamina and government bodies, has announced plans to develop a waste-to-hydrogen system in West Java, Indonesia. The project includes a hydrogen refueling station and biogas-based hydrogen production from a local landfill.

Hyundai, Pertamina Plan Waste-To-Hydrogen Project In Indonesia’s West Java

At the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit held in Jakarta in April 2025, Hyundai Motor Group shared its plan to establish a waste-to-hydrogen (W2H) system in Indonesia. The project is a joint effort with Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), the Ministry of National Development Planning (BAPPENAS), and the state-owned energy firm PT Pertamina.

Hydrogen Station to Use CNG Infrastructure

As part of the project, Hyundai plans to open an on-site hydrogen refueling station by 2027. The station will use Pertamina’s existing compressed natural gas (CNG) infrastructure. The hydrogen will be produced from biogas at the Sarimukti landfill, located near Bandung in West Java.
Construction is expected to begin later this year, following a completed technical feasibility study. The project will involve a consortium of Korean companies and institutions experienced in hydrogen technology.

Focus on Local Waste and Disaster Risk Reduction

The Sarimukti landfill currently handles a major share of Bandung’s daily waste. The area has seen environmental issues such as fires and floods, often linked to waste buildup and changing weather conditions. The project aims to use this waste to produce low-carbon hydrogen while addressing safety and infrastructure issues around the landfill.
Hyundai has also partnered with Good Neighbors and Sejin G&E to support local water and healthcare services, and to secure the landfill from future risks.

Indonesia Becomes First Overseas W2H Site

This initiative marks Hyundai’s first W2H project outside South Korea. The company has previously developed similar hydrogen projects in Korean cities like Chungju and Cheongju. Indonesia, where Hyundai completed a vehicle manufacturing plant in 2022, is now seen as a key location for its regional hydrogen activities.
Hyundai introduced its W2H roadmap for Indonesia during CES 2024 in Las Vegas. The project is part of Hyundai’s hydrogen business under its HTWO brand, which oversees all steps in the hydrogen supply chain.
