India's Auto Sector Embraces Alternative Fuels And Electrification: SIAM At Times Drive Auto Summit & Awards 2025

At the Times Drive Auto Summit & Awards 2025, Prashant K Banerjee, Chief Executive Director of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), discussed India's growing automobile sector, sustainability goals and the role of alternative fuels. He emphasized SIAM's commitment to decarbonization, biofuels, CNG, LNG and electrification, aligning with government policies and global climate targets.

India’s Automotive Growth and Global Position

Speaking at the event, Banerjee highlighted India's position as the world's third-largest automobile market. He noted that with economic growth, the automotive sector would play a key role in India’s transition from the fifth to the fourth-largest global economy.

Decarbonization and Sustainability Efforts

Banerjee outlined SIAM’s focus on sustainability, stating that India is on track to meet the climate targets set at COP26. He spoke about the importance of alternative fuels, including biofuels, compressed biogas and ethanol, in reducing carbon emissions. The automotive industry is working to expand the use of ethanol-blended fuels, with E20 already introduced and flexible-fuel vehicles being tested.

Adoption of CNG and LNG

Banerjee pointed out that India has a significant CNG vehicle market, including cars, buses and two-wheelers. He mentioned the introduction of a CNG-powered two-wheeler as a step toward reducing dependency on conventional fuels. The industry is also working on increasing LNG adoption for long-haul transportation to lower emissions in the trucking sector.

Electrification and Public Transport

Electrification was another key topic. Banerjee stated that India is seeing a rise in electric vehicle adoption, supported by government initiatives such as PLI schemes and FAME policies. He emphasized that electric mobility is progressing in phases, with public transport, three-wheelers and commercial fleets leading the transition.

Industry Collaboration and Future Roadmap

Banerjee reiterated SIAM’s focus on collaboration with energy providers, policymakers, and manufacturers to achieve sustainability goals. He concluded by reaffirming the industry’s commitment to cleaner mobility and urged continued cooperation to support India's transition toward a low-carbon transportation system.
