McLaren has confirmed plans to develop a performance-focused SUV, marking a significant expansion of its product strategy. The company has not revealed the name, design or technical specifications of the upcoming model yet. However, it has confirmed that the SUV will be developed as part of a wider investment programme covering new manufacturing facilities, engines and transmissions.
The new SUV is expected to compete in the high-performance luxury SUV segment, where models such as the Lamborghini Urus and Aston Martin DBX are already present.
McLaren SUV: What We Know
McLaren CEO Nick Collins has confirmed the company’s plans for a performance SUV. The upcoming model is expected to be positioned in the high-performance luxury SUV segment.
The SUV is expected to have four doors and offer greater practicality than McLaren’s existing two-seat models. This could allow the brand to target buyers looking for a McLaren that can be used for everyday driving and family requirements.
McLaren COO Michael Straughan has previously indicated that the new model will compete with performance SUVs such as the Lamborghini Urus and Aston Martin DBX.
Unlike Ferrari’s approach with the Purosangue, McLaren’s SUV is expected to follow a more conventional performance-SUV format.
Hybrid Powertrain On Cards
McLaren has not confirmed the powertrain specifications of its upcoming SUV. However, the company is expected to use a hybrid powertrain instead of going directly to a fully electric setup.
McLaren has said that it currently does not plan to introduce a fully electric vehicle, with the company continuing to focus on hybridisation as part of its future powertrain strategy.
Earlier reports have suggested that the SUV could use a V8 engine combined with an electric motor. However, McLaren has not confirmed the engine configuration, battery capacity, power output or performance figures.
The McLaren SUV will form part of a broader change in the company’s powertrain strategy. McLaren plans to develop two new engines and transmissions in-house.
The company currently works with external suppliers for some of its powertrain requirements. Developing these components internally is expected to give McLaren greater control over the development of future models.
New McLaren Factory Planned
The £500 million investment will also be used to establish a new vehicle assembly facility in the UK. McLaren currently manufactures its cars in Woking, while its South Yorkshire facility is involved in carbon-fibre technology and manufacturing. The expansion is expected to create at least 1,000 jobs across McLaren and its supply chain.
McLaren SUV: Launch Timeline
McLaren has not announced a confirmed global debut date for the SUV. The company has stated that the model will enter production before 2030, while reports suggest that production could begin around 2028.
The company is yet to reveal the SUV’s name, dimensions, design, engine specifications, performance figures or expected price.
The upcoming model will take McLaren into a segment that has become important for several performance and luxury car manufacturers, including Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Bentley and Ferrari.
