New Range Rover Velar to Debut as EV First, Hybrid Version to Follow
Jaguar Land Rover is set to launch the next-generation Range Rover Velar as a fully electric SUV, with a global debut anticipated in the coming months.
New Range Rover Velar to Debut as EV First, Hybrid Version to Follow
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is preparing to unveil the next-generation Range Rover Velar, and it will arrive first as a fully electric SUV. The all-new Velar is expected to make its global debut within a few months. Interestingly, the British luxury carmaker also plans to introduce a hybrid version later, giving customers the choice between electric and combustion-assisted powertrains.
Key Highlights:
- Next-generation Range Rover Velar to debut as an all-electric SUV within the next six months.
- JLR will introduce a hybrid version later to meet changing global demand.
- Upcoming Velar EV is expected to feature 800V architecture for ultra-fast charging.
- New model will get a sleeker coupe-SUV design and rival the Mercedes GLC, BMW X3 and Volvo XC60.
EV First, Hybrid to Arrive Later
The upcoming Range Rover Velar successor will be underpinned by JLR's new Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA), a platform originally developed exclusively for electric vehicles.
However, the company has now decided to re-engineer the architecture to support hybrid powertrains as well. This marks a shift in strategy as JLR acknowledges that customer demand for internal combustion engine-based vehicles remains strong in several markets.
The hybrid version is expected to become a new addition to JLR's powertrain portfolio, although the company has not yet revealed details about the engine or electrification technology. It is also unclear whether the SUV will feature a range-extender hybrid system that had previously been discussed.
800V Architecture Could Enable Ultra-Fast Charging
While official technical specifications are still under wraps, the electric Velar is expected to benefit from advanced 800V electrical architecture. This technology could deliver significantly faster charging times, similar to the upcoming Range Rover Electric.
Battery details have not been confirmed either. It remains uncertain whether the new Velar, expected to measure around 4.8 metres in length, will use the same large 118kWh battery pack as the flagship Range Rover Electric.
The battery packs for the new EV will be sourced from Tata's Agratas gigafactory, which is currently under construction in Somerset, UK.
Coupe-Inspired Design Expected
Spy shots of test vehicles suggest the next-generation Velar will move away from the traditional upright SUV styling associated with Range Rover models.
Instead, it is expected to feature a more aerodynamic, coupe-like profile with a sharply sloping roofline and a short rear deck, giving it a sportier appearance than the current model.
Rivals and Market Outlook
Once launched, the new Range Rover Velar will compete against premium midsize SUVs such as the Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3 and Volvo XC60, along with their electric variants.
JLR's decision to introduce a hybrid option comes at a time when demand for luxury electric vehicles has slowed in several global markets. Several premium manufacturers, including Aston Martin, Bentley, Lotus and Porsche, have either delayed or revised their electrification plans in response to changing market conditions. JLR has also pushed back the launches of its flagship Jaguar and Range Rover electric models, likely waiting for stronger consumer demand before expanding its EV portfolio.
