Ola's Bhavish Aggarwal Calls ICE Designs 'Ugly'
Ola Electric launched its Roadster X series electric motorcycles in India. During the launch event, Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal made a controversial statement, calling ICE motorcycle designs "ugly" and "boring." While Aggarwal is entitled to promote his products, his method of targeting ICE vehicles is questionable. Though his statement may hold some weight in the mass commuter segment, it disregards the diverse design evolution of ICE motorcycles across various categories.
Ola's Bhavish Aggarwal Calls ICE Designs 'Ugly'
The electric mobility wing of cab aggregator Ola, widely known as Ola Electric has been infamous for condescending and controversial statements by its CEO, Bhavish Aggarwal. Earlier today Ola Electric launched its Roadster X series electric motorcycle range in India. At the launch event Bhavish yet again made a rather debatable claim which has the potential to throw motorcycling enthusiasts across the country into a fury.
Launching the Ola Roaster X series electric motorcycles, Ola's Bhavish Aggarwal calls ICE motorcycle designs 'Ugly'. Ola for long has been carrying a tagline - End of ICE Age. This refers to the end of Internal Combustion Engine vehicles in the two wheeler segment. Addressing the gathering at the event he stated, “So we are comparing against ICE so we should also look at also... I mean you can; even tell, Kaunsa brand ne kaunsa bike banaya hai. That's how boring and dull the design has gotten. EVs is the moment when all this dull design also breaks with a very fresh imagery and very fresh identity for biking for the masses. I just can't get over how ugly motorcycle designs are today”.
While he is free to make ground space for his product while entering a new segment, his methods of targeting ICE vehicles is certainly questionable. If you are to look at his recent statement from a practical standpoint questioning the design elements of ICE two-wheelers one must understand the chronology first. ICE two-wheelers sport a design which boasts over a century of evolution and are currently offered in commuter, street, sport, cruiser, adventure, scrambler, touring, cafe racer and many more. So the statement from Ola CEO is more talk and less show. However the recently launched Ola Roaster X series starts from Rs 74,999 (ex-showroom) putting it in the commuter segment and if we are to consider mass commuter segment ICE motorcycles then the statement from Bhavish Aggarwal does carry some weight.
