Recently a report has surfaced online claiming that Indian automaker Tata Motors has sold the Jaguar brand to China’s Geely Automotive Group, excluding Land Rover. The news, first published by a publication which stated that the sale was part of Jaguar’s transition into an EV-only luxury brand, so is that true? Let's do a fact check for the same.
Fact Check: No! Tata Has Not Sold Jaguar To Geely
A recent report from "The Autodrive” has surfaced online with the headline “Tata Offloads Jaguar To Geely”. This is a publication from Bangladesh which has filed this report on its website and has shared corresponding posts on its social media handles as well.
When this report caught our eye, it did raise suspicion. Tata Motors is achieving success at a global stage with its brand JLR. So, we undertook some research and we figured out that the claims made by this publication are false.
Still we decided to double check and our team reached out to Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) teams to verify these claims. Following which both the companies confirmed this news was not true. However, no official statement has been issued for the same as the publication which had originally posted this report had revealed that this was an April Fools Day prank and the report has also since been removed.
Jaguar’s Future
The Jaguar of JLR brand under the umbrella of Tata Motors is undergoing a massive transformation, aiming to become a fully electric luxury car brand. The company had also recently unveiled the Type 00 concept in Milan, offering a sneak peak of the future. The company had also revealed that its first production model under pure EV identity is scheduled to be introduced towards the end of 2025.
JLR’s History Under Tata Motors
Tata Motors acquired Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) from Ford back in 2008. Back then the brand was struggling to keep afloat but Tata Motors turned things around for the brand. Under Tata's ownership, JLR expanded its model lineup and emerged as a major global car brand which also improved its financial performance. To sum it up Jaguar remains under Tata’s umbrella and reports of its sale to Geely are inaccurate.
