Volvo XC60, XC90 Long-Range PHEV Unveiled with Up to 200km EV Range

Volvo Cars has expanded its plug-in hybrid range in Europe and the US with new long-range versions of the XC60 and XC90 . The updated SUVs get larger batteries and more powerful electric motors, allowing them to cover significantly more distance on electric power alone. The XC60 offers up to 200km of electric range, while the XC90 can travel up to 160km.
Key Highlights:
  • Volvo XC60 Long Range PHEV gets up to 200km electric range
  • Volvo XC90 Long Range PHEV offers up to 160km electric range
  • Both SUVs use a 41.2kWh battery and 130kW electric motor
  • Updated XC60 gets new design, safety features and Google Gemini AI
Volvo says the new plug-in hybrid powertrains provide more than 2.5 times the electric range of the existing PHEV models. The PHEV versions will be sold alongside the mild-hybrid variants.

Volvo XC60, XC90 PHEV: Powertrain and Range

The XC60 Long Range PHEV is available in T6 AWD and T8 AWD versions. Both use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, a 41.2kWh battery pack and a 130kW electric motor.
The combined power output stands at 454bhp, while peak torque is rated at 669Nm. Volvo claims an electric range of up to 200km and a total range of up to 1,240km. The most powerful version can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds. The battery can be fully charged in around four hours using a 16A charger.
The seven-seat XC90 will be offered with a single long-range PHEV variant alongside its mild-hybrid powertrain. It uses the same 2.0-litre engine, 41.2kWh battery and 130kW electric motor as the XC60. Power and torque figures remain unchanged at 454bhp and 669Nm. However, because of the XC90's larger size and weight, its electric range is rated at up to 160km, while the combined range goes up to 1,100km.

Volvo XC60 PHEV: Exterior Design

Along with the new PHEV powertrain, the XC60 has received several exterior updates. These include a redesigned grille, front bumper, bonnet and front wings, along with new alloy wheels. The SUV also gets redesigned Thor's Hammer Matrix LED headlights. At the rear, the tailgate, LED lamps and bumper have been revised, with Volvo using more horizontal design elements.

Volvo XC60 PHEV: Interior Design

Inside, the XC60 gets a redesigned dashboard and door panels. The cabin can be specified with wood trim and ventilated Nappa leather upholstery. A new 11.2-inch touchscreen runs Volvo's latest infotainment interface. The updated XC60 also gains several new active safety and driver assistance features. These include automatic emergency steering, automatic emergency braking, cyclist alerts, lane change assist and a 360-degree camera with a 3D view.
Another major technology addition is Google's Gemini AI assistant. It allows occupants to use natural language commands for tasks such as planning journeys, finding stops and managing messages.
The XC90 continues with its seven-seat configuration and Scandinavian-inspired cabin. It can also be equipped with a Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system, while Google Gemini has been added to its technology package.
Both SUVs will receive over-the-air software updates. Volvo has opened order books for the new models, including Black Edition versions, in selected markets. Production is scheduled to begin later this autumn.
