BMW S 1000 R, S 1000 RR, F 800 GS and More Recalled in US Due to Faulty Emergency Call System

BMW North America has announced a voluntary recall affecting 33 motorcycles from the 2025 model year due to a software issue that may deactivate the emergency call (eCall) feature. The affected models include various BMW motorcycles manufactured between March and April 2025. Although no incidents have been reported, the malfunction could hinder emergency responders' ability to locate the motorcycle, raising safety concerns. BMW will address the issue through over-the-air software updates, with notifications sent to owners starting September 12, 2025.

BMW North America has initiated a voluntary safety recall for 33 motorcycles in the U.S. market for the 2025 model year due to a software-related issue that may deactivate the emergency call (eCall) function.
The recall includes BMW F 800 GS, F 900 GS, R 1300 GS Adventure, S 1000 R, S 1000 RR, K 1600 GT and R 1300 GS. All affected motorcycles were manufactured between March and April 2025.
According to the report filed by BMW to NHTSA said, "This safety recall involves the emergency call (eCall) system. On affected motorcycles, the eCall system may have been inadvertently deactivated due to an error within the dataset in the provisioning backend system. If the eCall (manual, and automatic in case of a crash) does not function, then the motorcycle location information would not be transmitted. Although the rider is alerted to the loss of functionality, the rider is only alerted one time and, therefore, for any subsequent incidents they may be unaware of the nonfunctionality. As a result, this could delay or not allow emergency responders from locating the motorcycle, which could increase the risk for potentially injured riders."
Although no crashes or injuries have been linked to the defect, BMW stated that the malfunction could delay emergency response times in the event of an accident, increasing the risk to riders.
To deal with the issue BMW plans to roll out software fixes via over-the-air (OTA) updates to restore the eCall system functionality. Owners will be notified by first-class mail starting September 12, 2025 and are advised to check their motorcycle’s eCall status. If the system remains non-functional, they can visit a BMW dealership for a free repair.
