German automaker, BMW recently announced that the M2 CS had set a Nurburgring lap record for compact cars. The BMW M2 CS set an official lap record of 7 minutes and 25.5 seconds, dethroning the previous lap record holder, the Audi RS3. The most powerful G87 version of the M2 CS shattered the lap record by 7.6 seconds. Notably, the gap between the CS version and the standard M2 was higher at approximately 13.2 seconds.
The BMW M2 CS is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0L inline-six engine producing 522.74 bhp and 650 Nm of torque. The M2 CS boasts 49.3 bhp and 100 Nm of torque more than the standard M2. Not only that but the M2 CS is lighter by 30 kg than the standard M2. Jörg Weidinger, BMW M development engineer was behind the wheel of the BMW M2 CS which shattered the record. Weidinger was also behind the wheel of the standard M2 when it set a lap time in 2023.
While the standard M2 set its lap using Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, the M2 CS ran on stickier Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS rubber which are road-legal tires. Interestingly, when the car made its debut in the second half of May, the M division highlighted the availability of ‘ultra-track’ tires.
Furthermore, when BMW teased a camouflaged car, the record-setting lap was completed before the official debut. Weidinger set the new benchmark on April 11, about six weeks ahead of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este premiere. The lap time corresponds to the longer 20.8-kilometer configuration of the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.
However, the BMW M2 CS remains slower than the M4 CS, which clocked a lap time of 7 minutes and 21.9 seconds, making it 3.6 seconds faster. The fastest production BMW to ever lap the Nurburgring Nordschleife remains the M4 CSL, with a lap time of 7.18.1, approximately 7.4 seconds ahead of the M2 CS. While the German automaker BMW has hinted at the possibility of an M2 CSL, but there is no official communication from BMW.
