Mercedes-Benz EQB Models Recalled in US Over Battery Connection Issue
Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling 660 units of its EQB 300 and EQB 350 electric vehicles from model years 2022-2023 due to a defect in the high-voltage battery assembly. The issue involves a screw connection in the busbar that may not comply with production standards, potentially leading to sudden power interruptions and loss of propulsion without prior warning. While no accidents or injuries have been reported, affected vehicles will receive a replacement battery to address this defect. The supplier has since revised its production methods to prevent future occurrences.
Mercedes-Benz EQB Models Recalled in US Over Battery Connection Issue
Mercedes-Benz USA has announced a voluntary safety recall covering 660 units of its 2022–2023 EQB 300 4MATIC and EQB 350 4MATIC electric vehicles that were manufactured between May 4, 2022 and August 16, 2023 due to a defect in the high-voltage battery assembly.
According to the report filed by Mercedes to NHTSA, Mercedes-Benz determined that on certain Model Year (“MY”) 2022-2023 EQB 4MATIC (243 platform) vehicles, the screw connection of the busbar in the high-voltage battery might not meet current production specifications. In this case, the screw head might not sit flush on the busbar which could result in sporadic interruption of power transmission and a sudden loss of propulsion without warning . As a result, the risk of a crash might be increased.
Due to a deviation in the production process at the supplier, the busbar might have been assembled with an unsuitable batch of screws. Before the issue occurs, the driver will not receive a warning due to the nature of the failure mechanism. When the issue occurs, the driver may be made aware of the issue by a warning message in the instrument cluster, report added.
Investigations into the defect began in 2023 after field complaints were reported. By early 2025, testing confirmed the problem was not linked to fire risk but could still cause propulsion loss. Mercedes-Benz has identified 20 field reports and 9 warranty claims in the U.S., but no related accidents, injuries, or property damage have been reported.
To deal with the issue, affected vehicles may receive a replacement high-voltage battery with corrected busbar connections. The automaker confirmed that the supplier modified its production process as of August 17, 2023, to prevent recurrence.
