Toyota Recalls 1,716 Vehicles Over Potential Airbag Malfunction

Toyota has issued a recall for 1,716 vehicles due to a defect in the spiral cable assembly, which could cause airbag malfunctions. The recall affects certain 2023 models of the Corolla, Corolla Cross, Highlander, Tacoma, and select Lexus models. The issue stems from an insufficient weld in the Flexible Flat Cable (FFC), potentially disabling the driver’s airbag.

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing has announced a voluntary recall of 1,716 vehicles that were produced between February 22, 2023 and July 12, 2023 due to a defect in the spiral cable assembly, which could cause airbag malfunction. Toyota estimates that 56% of the recalled vehicles contain the defective component.

  • 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross
  • 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid
  • 2023 Toyota Highlander
  • 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
  • 2023 Toyota Tacoma

According to the report filled by Toyota to NHTSA, the vehicles may not comply with some requirements of FMVSS No. 208 where driver’s airbag deployment is needed. This could result in an increased risk of injury to the driver in a crash.
This issue only involves the subject vehicles which were assembled with spiral cable assemblies that include a Flexible Flat Cable (FFC) that may not have been welded sufficiently due to a specific production issue and which now require inspection after having been potentially incorrectly inspected in connection with recall 23V-480, the report added.
Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by March 30, 2025. Toyota and Lexus dealerships will inspect the spiral cable assembly and replace the component if necessary, free of charge. Customers who previously paid for related repairs may be eligible for reimbursement under Toyota’s General Reimbursement Plan.
