Volkswagen Celebrates 50 Years Of Polo With Special Harlequin Themed Livery

German automaker Volkswagen celebrating the 50 years of its iconic global hatchback Polo has taken the wraps off the Harlequin-themed livery on a Polo R World Rallycross (WRX) show car. The company has showcased this special livery on the race model Polo at Bicester Motion springtime Scramble event. Sharing this update the company revealed that this design was selected through an online poll conducted on social media platforms. Volkswagen has also planned additional public displays and events related to the 50th anniversary of the Polo throughout the year.

Harlequin Edition Based Design

The 50 years model of this car gets new livery inspired from the colours from the Polo Harlequin edition which was introduced back in the 1990s. These colours are Chagall blue (LD5D), Flash red (LP3G), Ginster yellow (LR132) and Pistachio (LD6D). The design follows a pop-art pattern from the 1980s. Four livery options were shared with the public, and the current design received the most votes.

Replica Of WRX Vehicle Showcased

This special livery has been draped on the Polo R WRX show car. The company highlights that this car is a replica of the one used by Johan Kristoffersson in FIA WRX events. Volkswagen also shared that it plans to use this livery on other Polo rally cars in future activities related to the anniversary.

Other Polo Models Showcased In Celebration

Alongside the WRX show car, four other Polo models were presented at the event. These included a 1975 Polo GLS Mk1 in Inari silver, a Polo Mk2 in Cherry red, a current-generation Polo Black Edition, and a Polo GTI in blue and black. The display showed different versions of the Polo released over the past five decades.

Management’s Viewpoint

Mike Orford, Head of PR and Communications at Volkswagen UK said, “The Polo is a model that resonates with so many people for different reasons. They might have been fans of the Polo rally cars as they dominated world championships over the years, their parents might have owned a Mk1 or Mk2 Polo, or it might have been the car in which they learned to drive”.
“Whatever the reason, the Polo is a special and enduring model for Volkswagen and that’s why it is great when we get to celebrate these milestone moments in such a colourful way. We’re really looking forward to seeing this one-off livery in action later in the year as the birthday celebrations really ramp up,” he added.
