Volkswagen Set To Launch 50th Anniversary Special Golf GTi, Sets Record At Nurburgring Nordschleife
German automaker, Volkswagen is set to unveil its Golf GTi Edition 50 on June 20, 2025, at the Nürburgring 24-hour race. The exclusive anniversary model, celebrating 50 years of the Golf GTI in 2026, has became the fastest road-legal Volkswagen on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Racing driver Benny Leuchter achieved a lap record of 07:46:13 minutes in a near-production test vehicle of the Golf GTi Edition 50. Leuchter who extensively tests and tunes chassis for Volkswagen's Development department, conducted the record-breaking drive during the official record attempt at the Nürburgring.
"The new Golf GTI EDITION 50 is a statement with which Volkswagen expresses the pure GTI idea – the combination of superior drive power and highly precise chassis with front-wheel drive – more effectively than ever before," stated Benny Leuchter following his record run.
Furthermore, the German automaker stated that the Golf GTi Edition 50 is expected to offer an optional Performance package including a performance chassis and lightweight 19-inch semi-slick Potenza Race tires from Bridgestone. These tires, specifically developed for the car, are mounted on lightweight forged wheels, reducing unsprung and rotating masses. Leuchter highlighted this package as a decisive factor in achieving the record time.
The vehicle's overall setup is designed for precision on the Nordschleife. "The entire set-up of the Golf GTi Edition 50 means you can drive the ideal line of the Nordschleife with high precision," explained Leuchter.
Furthermore, the record surpasses previous Volkswagen Nurburgring Nordschleife records, making the 50th Anniversary Volkswagen Golf GTi faster than all its predecessors. Benny Leuchter set a Volkswagen internal record of 07:49:21 minutes in a 305 bhp front-wheel-drive Golf GTi Clubsport. In 2022, he improved his time to 07:47:31 in the 328 bhp all-wheel-drive Golf R 20 Years.
This comes on the back of the recent launch of the Volkswagen Golf GTi in India at Rs 52.99 lakh. Additionally, the first batch of bookings of 150 units of the Volkswagen Golf GTi were completely full. The company is expected to bring another 100 units in a second batch with bookings expected to open later this year. The Golf GTi is powered by a 2.0L TSI engine producing 261.37 bhp and 370 Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission.
