Hyundai & Exide Come Together For EV Battery Localisation In India

To push sustainable mobility in India, Hyundai has partnered up with Exide to produce EV battery cells locally. These advanced lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cells, designed for long-lasting performance with over 10,000 charging cycles. They will power future electric vehicles from Hyundai and Kia in India. This move aims to lower costs, strengthen local supply chains, and support India’s push toward a greener future.

South Korean automaker Hyundai has announced a partnership with Exide Energy Solutions to produce and supply lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery cells for its electric vehicles (EVs) in India. This agreement positions Hyundai as the first Indian automaker to use locally manufactured battery cells in its EVs.
Sharing this update the company stated that this collaboration is aimed at localising battery production, reducing costs and strengthening EV supply chain in India. The use of LFP cells, which offer over 10,000 charging cycles compared to the 1,000 to 2,300 cycles of conventional lithium-ion batteries is expected to enhance battery performance and reliability.
This partnership aligns with Hyundai’s broader strategy to invest in India’s EV ecosystem and contribute to the country’s carbon neutrality goals. The localisation of battery production is a step towards building a sustainable EV infrastructure and meeting the growing demand for eco-friendly mobility solutions.
Exide on the other hand is a among the prominent manufacturers of lead-acid batteries with a strong presence in automotive, industrial and renewable energy sectors in India. Hyundai has been a key player in the Indian automotive market since late 1990’s and this agreement between these giants will benefit EVs from Hyundai and Kia in the Indian market.
Hyundai’s current lineup of electric vehicles in the domestic market includes the Ioniq 5. Hyundai is also gearing up to introduce the electric version of its popular SUV Creta in the Indian market in early 2025. Kia on the other hand offers two EVs in the domestic market - the EV6 and the EV9.
