India's EV Registrations Reach 56.75 Lakh As Of February 8, 2025: MoRTH
In recent Parliament preceding's Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) declared that as on 08/02/2025 the total EVs registrations in India stood at 56.75 lakh and total registered vehicles are at 3,897.71 lakhs.
Earlier in December MoRTH revealed that a total of 36,39,617 EVs were registered from April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2024 out of 10,75,31,040 total vehicle registrations showing a market share of 3.38% for the electric vehicles.
Recently, The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the "PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme." The scheme is designed to advance electric mobility in India with a total outlay of Rs 10,900 crore over two years. The initiative is being managed by the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI).
Major Allocations In PM E-DRIVE
- Subsidies: Rs 3,679 crore earmarked for demand incentives for e-2W (two-wheelers), e-3W (three-wheelers), e-ambulances and e-trucks.
- Infrastructure Support: Rs 7,171 crore allocated for e-buses, charging stations and vehicle testing agency upgrades.
- E-Vouchers for Incentives: Buyers, including individuals and businesses, can avail subsidies through Aadhaar-based e-KYC authentication and the PM E-DRIVE app/portal.
PM E-DRIVE scheme aims to support
- 14,028 e-buses
- 2.05 lakh e-3 wheelers
- 1.10 lakh e-rickshaws and carts
- 24.79 lakh e-2 wheelers
Madhumita Agrawal, Founder & CEO, Oben Electric, said, "The surge in EV registrations is a testament to India’s accelerating transition towards sustainable and clean mobility. This shift has been driven by a strong trifecta - progressive government policies, the relentless innovation of EV manufacturers, and the enthusiasm of early adopters. Initiatives like FAME II and PM E-DRIVE have played a pivotal role in expanding EV adoption and strengthening charging infrastructure."
Bharath Rao, CEO and Founder of Emobi, said, “The government's push over the last 5 years with various schemes such as FAME, PMEdrive, PMESewa, and PLI schemes have helped electric vehicle product development and localisation of the supply chains. All of this augurs well to see price parity of electric vehicles with ICE vehicles and we expect to see significant growth in the sector in the coming years on the back of such significant support from the government."
MHI has formulated other schemes as well to support EV ecosystem, including:
- FAME India Phase-II: Launched on April 1, 2019, with a budget of Rs 11,500 crore, this scheme supports the adoption of electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, e-buses, and public charging stations.
- PLI-Auto Scheme: Approved on September 23, 2021, with an outlay of Rs 25,938 crore, this scheme provides financial incentives to encourage domestic manufacturing of advanced automotive technology products.
- PLI for Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC): Announced on May 12, 2021, with an allocation of Rs 18,100 crore, this scheme aims to establish a domestic manufacturing base for 50 GWh of ACC batteries.
- PM e-Bus Sewa-Payment Security Mechanism (PSM) Scheme: Notified on October 28, 2024, this scheme has a budget of Rs 3,435.33 crore to support the deployment of over 38,000 electric buses.
- SPMEPCI Scheme: Announced on March 15, 2024, this scheme focuses on the manufacturing of electric passenger cars, requiring a minimum investment of Rs 4,150 crore and phased domestic value addition targets.
Ankit Sharma, CEO & Co-Founder, Vidyuta, said, "India’s remarkable EV adoption, with over 56.75 lakh electric vehicles now on the roads, is a testament to the growing confidence in clean mobility. The recent approval of the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) further strengthens India’s position in the global EV supply chain by reducing dependency on imports, especially from China, and fostering self-reliance on essential materials. With an expenditure of Rs 16,300 crore and an expected investment of Rs 18,000 crore by PSUs, the mission plays a crucial role in advancing the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative."
Ishaan Parwanda, Director, Trinity Touch, said, "The registration of over 56.75 lakh electric vehicles in India, as of February 8, 2025, is a powerful testament to the success of government initiatives like PM E-DRIVE and FAME India in driving EV adoption. This milestone also reflects the growing confidence consumers have in domestically manufactured EVs. By reducing our reliance on imports, particularly from China, and building a resilient local supply chain, we can further accelerate the growth of India's EV ecosystem."
Prashant Vashishtha , Founder & Chairman, Sokudo Electric India, said, “Evolution towards a sustainable electrified future made significant progress because of 56.75 lakh EV registrations in India being achieved. The government has established EV adoption conditions through PM E-DRIVE and FAME India alongside different PLI schemes that led directly to this expansion. The PM E-DRIVE scheme obtained recent government approval which includes Rs 10,900 crore in funding for industrial development. These strategies regarding demand inducements and infrastructure development and electric bus implementation will accelerate the transformation toward green transportation.
