Is India Inc Focusing On Short Distance Electric Mobility? Here's What Nitin Gadkari Opines

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari at the Times Drive Conclave and Awards highlighted that short-distance electric mobility is going to be the future for passenger as well as public transportation.
He stated that short-distance electric mobility for public transportation is the way ahead for India. Gadkari shared that the prices for Lithium-ion batteries have reduced when compared to five years ago. He highlighted that earlier Lithium-ion batteries would cost approximately $150 whereas the prices of the batteries have reduced drastically to $100-$110.
Owing to the reduction of prices of Lithium-ion batteries, short-distance mobility becomes a real possibility since the batteries are going to be smaller compared to conventional electric vehicles. As per Gadkari, the buses will travel fixed distances which can range from 40-60 km.
In addition to that, he further opined that the short-distance electric scooters would also be a great option for transforming micro-mobility. He stressed that the electric scooters that would cover shorter distances have smaller batteries and would be far cheaper than the electric scooters that are currently operating in the Indian electric two-wheeler space.
The cheaper pricing of the short-distance electric scooters would provide a boost to the adoption of electric mobility. Gadkari asserted that fossil fuel will be gradually phased out in order to focus on a more sustainable future with electric vehicles playing a crucial role. Concluding his address, he stated that sustainability is key for the government and there are multiple plans to transition commercial vehicles as well as farm equipment from being powered by fossil fuels to being powered by electricity.
