Isuzu To Use Green Steel For Commercial Vehicles And EV Facility Construction

Isuzu will be the first Japanese commercial vehicle manufacturer to use green steel as raw material starting April 2025. This steel will be used in mass-produced vehicles like the ELF EV truck and in the construction of their 'The EARTH lab' EV facility, aligning with Japan's emission reduction goals and the GX Acceleration Declaration.

Isuzu To Use Green Steel For Commercial Vehicles And EV Facility Construction

Japanese automaker Isuzu has announced that it will start using green steel as raw material for commercial vehicles and construction materials at its EV development and testing facility, ‘The EARTH lab’ which is under construction at the company’s Fujisawa facility in Kanagawa, Japan. Sharing this update the company claimed that this marks the first use of green steel in commercial vehicle manufacturing in Japan. The company also stated it will continue to implement carbon reduction measures across its business activities and production processes.

Procurement Of Green Steel

The company will start procuring green steel from April 2025. Supply will come from JFE Steel Corporation, Kobe Steel Ltd., and Nippon Steel Corporation. The procurement will follow a mass balance method, where steel producers allocate CO2 emission reductions to a part of their total production, based on third-party certification.

Application In Vehicles & Facility Construction

Isuzu plans to use green steel in mass-produced vehicles, including the battery electric light-duty ELF EV truck. Around 1,000 tons of green steel will also be used in the structural framework of The EARTH lab., scheduled for completion in June 2026.

Alignment With National Emission Goals

The adoption of green steel is part of the company’s response to national targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The steel industry accounts for a significant portion of CO2 emissions in Japan’s industrial sector. The company is working with its suppliers to apply this material within its operations.

GX Acceleration Declaration

Isuzu has also announced its GX Acceleration Declaration in line with a national initiative introduced by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in December 2024. The program aims to promote the use of materials and processes that lower carbon emissions across industries.
