Nissan Reveals Third-Gen LEAF With Improved Aerodynamics And New Platform

Nissan has revealed the third-generation LEAF, drawing on data from 15 years and 700,000 global sales. The new electric model features improved aerodynamics, a revised platform and electrochromic roof technology, with more details expected later in June 2025.

Nissan Reveals Third-Gen LEAF With Improved Aerodynamics And New Platform

Nissan Motor Co., has released a new short video series featuring the team behind the development of the all-new third-generation LEAF. The series focuses on planning, design and engineering aspects of the electric vehicle, which is set for a global launch later in June 2025.

Informed by 15 Years of Use

Since the launch of the first-generation LEAF in 2010, the model has sold approximately 700,000 units globally. The third-generation version is said to be built on insights gathered from both earlier models. Owners have collectively logged around 28 billion kilometers, providing a large dataset that helped guide the new version’s development.

Emphasis on Aerodynamics

The exterior of the updated LEAF has been designed with aerodynamic efficiency as a key priority. The car achieves a drag coefficient of 0.26 in the U.S. and Japan. European versions, featuring different wheels and mirrors, reach a coefficient of 0.25. Design elements such as flush door handles, active grille shutters, a flat underfloor, and fastback shape all contribute to this result.

Roof Technology Supports Efficiency

One of the new features is an electrochromic panoramic roof that adjusts its transparency based on light levels. This system replaces traditional blinds or shades and helps maintain headroom. It also includes an infrared reflective layer designed to reduce solar heat inside the vehicle.

Interior Built on CMF-EV Platform

On the inside, the new LEAF is built on Nissan’s CMF-EV platform, which allows for a flat floor. This design supports a more open cabin layout without compromising usability.
Richard Candler, Vice president global product strategy stated “Beyond EV intenders and innovators we wanted the all-new Nissan LEAF to offer a truly credible alternative to combustion vehicles. We wanted it to balance emotional and rational appeal, ensuring it looks sleek and bold, whilst meeting the real-world needs of families with thoughtful design.”
