Suzuki President Confirms Small EV Hatchback In The Near Future

Toshihiro Suzuki, Representative Director and President, Suzuki Motor Corporation plans on launching a small EV car sometime in the near future in India. According to the Suzuki President, the e-Vitara is just a start and the need of the hour to gauge customer feedback. Maruti Suzuki is all set to launch their first EV in India in the form of the Vitara. The biggest challenge according to him on a small EV car is the range issue.

ICE cars usually have a range of around 500km with a 30-litre fuel tank and to match this range on an EV, the car needs a battery pack which will weigh around 250-300kgs according to T Suzuki, which means costs will be a big dampener as will the weight. So an EV with lower range for driving within city limits will be ideal. He didn’t reveal a specific timeline for the small EV, however, he is confident that Maruti Suzuki will launch a small hatchback EV in the next few year’s time.

The small EV hatchback will be part of Maruti Suzuki’s plan to launch six EVs by 2031. These EVs will be across segments from small affordable hatchbacks to large SUVs. By the end of the decade, Maruti Suzuki expects EVs to account for 15 percent of its total sales. The first of six EVs to go on sale is the e-Vitara which will be showcased at the Bharat Mobility Show and launched in March or April. Prices for this car should start around Rs 25 lakh.

Speaking to a select media at the eve of the Bharat Mobility Show 2025, Suzuki also emphasized on the fact that Suzuki Motor Corporation will make cars with multiple fuel options, including Hydrogen, CNG, pure EV, hybrid and internal combustion. Suzuki’s partnership with Toyota is most likely to be of great help in this.
