Tesla likely to Commence Operations in India from mid-July 2025: Model S, 3, X, Y and Cybertruck Incoming?

Elon Musk led, Tesla is likely to commence its India operations from mid-July 2025 with its first showroom in Mumbai. This would mark the company’s entry into the domestic market after years of speculation, back and forth tussle between Musk and Indian authorities regarding import duties. Also multiple reports on previous occasions have indicated plans for local operations, however it remains uncertain if Tesla will also set up a local manufacturing facility in the country.

Tesla’s first showroom in India is anticipated to be located at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. The showroom is expected to be around 4,000 sqft. and will operate under Tesla’s direct-to-customer retail model. While sales will be managed by Tesla directly, after-sales services are likely to involve local partners.

Tesla is expected to begin operations in India with the introduction of Model Y as its first product in the market. The Model Y for India could be imported from Tesla’s Berlin factory, which builds right-hand drive variants. It is likely to be priced around Rs 70 lakh (ex-showroom). In the future, Tesla may add the Model 3, S and X to its India line-up as well, but these details are likely to be revealed later. The Indian market also holds a high potential for the Cybertruck with all the street cred associated with its unique appeal.

The Indian government has been going all guns blazing with the Make-in-India initiative and it was a big grey area for Tesla till now as the company showed intent of selling CBU in the country first before establishing full-scale manufacturing facilities. This served as a roadblock for the company as India has high import taxes. So we anticipate that for now, Tesla will sell imported vehicles and will consider setting up a local manufacturing plant at a later stage. The Indian government is working on an electric vehicle policy that may include incentives for local production, which could support Tesla’s future manufacturing plans.

Tesla and Elon Musk are infamous for being outlandish and one should expect nothing less from its launch event in India as the anticipation for the brand has been quite high. The launch event in mid-July is expected to see the presence of Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
