The Volkswagen Tayron R-Line has come to India, and when I first heard the news, my mind went back to 2020. I remember few good things from the COVID era, and one of them is the few days I spent with the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace. It was an SUV that felt like a car when driven, giving you both practicality and simple driving pleasure — but it found few takers.

In 2026, the Tayron R-Line is ready to make a fresh attempt. From the onset, it’s got a similar powertrain and familiar Volkswagen design cues, although it does look fresh, and it will be going up against familiar rivals. However, Volkswagen is assembling it locally this time, which means the Tayron R-Line isn’t looking to just get a few crumbs from the pie, but a whole slice. Will VW’s latest SUV be able to entice seven-seater SUV buyers in the Rs 40–50 lakh space? We get behind the wheel to find out.

Volkswagen Tayron R-Line First Drive Review: Looks – Dressed to Impress

The Tayron R-Line is a handsome SUV. The design is unmistakably Volkswagen, but the softer edges give it a sense of freshness. Couple that with sleek LED lighting all around and illuminated logos at both ends, and the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line looks thoroughly modern while still maintaining an elegance that one does not associate with youthful exuberance.
What truly stood out was the Ultra Violet Metallic paint shade, which you can also see on our test car in the pictures. This shade, along with the impressive paint quality, makes the Tayron R-Line look far more expensive than what we believe Volkswagen India will price it at.
The inside matches the outside, which is to say that the interior feels similarly premium. The cabin is dressed in black, with only a few accents deviating from the norm. It looks properly sporty, though some buyers might feel a reduced sense of space due to the lack of lighter shades inside the cabin.

Volkswagen Tayron R-Line First Drive Review: Performance – Effortlessly Quick

Under the bonnet, the Tayron R-Line gets a 2.0-litre TSI engine producing 204 PS and 320 Nm, paired with a 7-speed DSG gearbox. Volkswagen’s 4Motion system means the Tayron R-Line benefits from an AWD setup. Out in the real world, the Tayron deals with everyday life well. There’s good low-end torque, and the DSG shifts up the cogs quickly, especially when you drive the SUV in Eco and Comfort modes. This means you get up to speed effortlessly and in a fuel-efficient manner as well.
Put your foot down, however, and this engine doesn’t need to stretch its legs — it’s always ready to go. Dialling in Sport mode sharpens throttle response and quickens the engine’s sprint towards its redline. From a standstill, the Tayron R-Line can dash from 0–100 km/h in 7.3 seconds with the help of Launch Control. These are impressive numbers for a family SUV, but more than the figures, it’s the manner in which the Tayron delivers its performance that truly makes for an engaging driving experience.
We ventured off the beaten path in search of good shooting locations, and while that didn’t quite pan out, it did show that the Tayron is capable over loose surfaces as well. That said, the Tiguan Allspace I drove all those years ago had proven its mettle when I simply pointed it towards a small hill near Pune and watched it climb up without much fuss. While I didn’t get an opportunity to test the Tayron in a similar manner, it did give the impression that it could hold its own off-road.
On the road, the 4Motion system also keeps things tidy when you hustle the Tayron through corners, with power seamlessly transferring to the outer wheels, keeping the SUV planted and predictable through bends.

Volkswagen Tayron R-Line First Drive Review: Features – Lavish and Refined

On the features front, the Tayron R-Line is a welcome surprise. Volkswagen is offering modern features that feel effortless to use. A prime example is the 15-inch touchscreen that takes centre stage on the dashboard and is angled slightly towards the driver. The graphics are large and well laid out, touch responses feel natural, and the system appears to have enough processing power to run everything smoothly.
Volkswagen has integrated numerous functions — including most climate controls, massage seat settings, driving modes, and other vehicle settings — into the touchscreen. Thankfully, the interface is designed in a way that doesn’t require diving deep into menus to access commonly used features.
The lights deserve a special mention. In Volkswagen terminology, they’re called IQ.LIGHT and are customisable. This applies to both the headlights and taillights, with three different lighting signatures on offer. What’s more, the headlights work in conjunction with the ADAS system to automatically control the high beam. They can even selectively mask specific sections while keeping the surrounding area illuminated. The tech works impressively well in real-world conditions and will be a massive help during night-time highway drives.
The Tayron R-Line also packs in a large panoramic sunroof, a 10.25-inch digital driver display, an 11-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, electrically powered front seats with ventilation (heating and cooling) and eight massage modes, a three-zone climate control system, a head-up display, and an electrically operated tailgate that can be opened or closed using gesture control. Lastly, the Tayron R-Line also gets ADAS, which worked well during our short drive, though a more comprehensive test would be needed to fully judge its effectiveness.

Volkswagen Tayron R-Line First Drive Review: Verdict – A Driver’s SUV

Cars today have largely migrated towards offering maximum comfort to occupants, often at the cost of driver engagement. The Volkswagen Tayron R-Line challenges that trend by bringing back a sense of involvement behind the wheel while still delivering the practicality and feature set expected of a premium SUV.
If you’re in the market for a petrol-powered, seven-seater premium SUV, the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line makes a strong case for itself. And if Volkswagen gets the pricing right (under Rs 45 lakh) the Tayron R-Line will be very hard to ignore.
