2026 Audi RS 5 Makes Global Debut With 630 bhp Plug-in Hybrid V6 Powertrain
Audi has introduced the 2026 RS 5 in sedan and Avant forms. The new model adopts a plug-in hybrid V6 powertrain producing 630bhphp and 825Nm of torque, replaces the RS4 Avant and earlier RS5 variants globally, and features an updated Quattro all-wheel-drive system with a new rear differential setup.
2026 Audi RS5 Makes Global Debut With 630 bhp Plug-in Hybrid V6
Audi revealed the new-generation RS 5 in 2026 as part of its updated performance line-up. The model is available in two body styles: a sedan (referred to as a limousine) and the Avant estate. The RS 5 replaces both the previous RS4 Avant and RS 5 Sportback and coupe in international markets. The new RS 5 is based on Audi’s revised platform strategy and introduces plug-in hybrid technology for the first time in the RS 5 range.

Plug-in Hybrid V6 Powertrain
The 2026 RS 5 uses a 2.9L twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine, paired with an electric motor integrated into an 8-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox. Combined output stands at 630bhp and 825Nm of torque.
Audi states that the RS 5 can accelerate from 0-100kph in 3.6 seconds. Despite the higher output, overall weight has increased due to hybrid components. The Avant has a kerb weight of 2,370kg, while the sedan is approximately 15kg lighter.
Battery, Charging And EV Range
The plug-in hybrid system uses a 25.9kWh battery pack, with 22kWh usable capacity. According to Audi, the RS 5 can travel over 80km in electric-only mode when fully charged. Charging is supported through AC power at speeds of up to 11kW. The battery is positioned at the rear, above the new rear differential assembly.
Updated Quattro All-Wheel Drive
The 2026 RS 5 introduces a revised version of Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. The 8-speed automatic gearbox is linked to a limited-slip centre differential that can distribute up to 85 percent of torque to the rear wheels or up to 70 percent to the front wheels.
The system includes a preload function that keeps the centre differential partially engaged to improve response during throttle inputs.
At the rear, the RS 5 features an electro-mechanical differential with Dynamic Torque Control. An electric actuator can deliver 8kW and 40Nm between the rear wheels before mechanical torque distribution occurs. Audi states that the system responds within 15 milliseconds and operates through a dedicated control unit that adjusts torque based on driving inputs and selected drive modes.
Performance Impact Of Hybrid System
The addition of hybrid components has resulted in a weight increase of around 550kg compared to the outgoing model. Torque output has increased by 37 percent compared to the previous RS4 Avant.
The added mass affects cargo capacity as well. In the Avant, boot space is reduced to 361 litres, which is 115 litres less than the non-hybrid A5 Avant. The sedan offers approximately 350 litres of luggage space.
Exterior Design Changes
The new RS 5 features a revised front grille design that extends into side air intakes. The LED daytime running lights have unique patterns specific to the RS variant. At the rear, the exhaust outlets are positioned closer together within the diffuser. The RS 5 comes standard with 20-inch wheels, while 21-inch wheels and carbon-ceramic brakes are available as options. Both the sedan and Avant feature a sloping roofline. The sedan uses a liftback-style tailgate hinged at the roof.
