Mitsubishi has taken the wraps off the fifth-generation Pajero, bringing back one of its most iconic SUVs after a long gap. The new-generation model marks a major shift from the Pajero that ended production in 2021, moving to a tougher ladder-frame platform and taking several mechanical cues from the Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck.
The new Pajero will be built in Thailand alongside the Triton and will initially go on sale in the Thai market. In Australia, pre-orders are scheduled to open in October, with deliveries expected to begin in December. The SUV retains its three-row, seven-seat layout, while a five-seat version is also expected in Australia.
Key Highlights:
  • Fifth-generation Mitsubishi Pajero unveiled after a long gap
  • Based on a modified Triton ladder-frame platform
  • Gets a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine producing up to 480 Nm

The new Pajero gets a more upright and boxy design compared with its predecessor. The front-end features Mitsubishi's C-shaped design elements and a wide horizontal-slat grille, while a Dakar-inspired hexagonal grille will also be offered.
Full-width light bars are positioned at both the front and rear, with the front lights featuring an animated lighting signature. Unlike earlier Pajero generations, the spare wheel is mounted underneath the rear of the SUV instead of on the tailgate.
The design also features distinctive C-pillar elements inspired by the roll bar of the first-generation Pajero. Mitsubishi will offer the SUV in six exterior colours, including the new Armor Copper and Phantom Blue shades. A range of accessories, including bull bars, will also be available.

Under the skin, the new Pajero is based on a heavily modified version of the Triton's ladder-frame chassis. Mitsubishi has strengthened the frame with thicker side members and additional cross-bracing.
The SUV gets a 2,870mm wheelbase, which is 260mm shorter than the Triton. The front and rear sections of the chassis have been specifically developed for the Pajero.
It uses a double-wishbone front suspension and a five-link rigid rear suspension with coil springs. This replaces the Triton's rear leaf springs and is aimed at providing a better balance between off-road ability and ride comfort.
The Pajero also gets rear disc brakes, a tighter turning circle and a higher driving position for improved visibility. Overall, it is around 100mm longer, wider and taller than the outgoing Pajero Sport.

The cabin is completely new and features a tall dashboard with a two-tier passenger-side glovebox and grab handles at both ends. Mitsubishi says the design takes inspiration from the first-generation Pajero and Japanese craftsmanship.
A large touchscreen sits in the centre, while physical controls for the climate system have been retained below it. Higher variants will feature a 14.3-inch infotainment display and a 14.3-inch digital instrument cluster, while some versions will get 12.3-inch screens.
The SUV also gets USB-C ports, a wireless smartphone charger and a traditional gear selector. A rear differential lock button and Mitsubishi's familiar four-wheel-drive controller are positioned on the centre console.
Selected variants are expected to offer features such as powered seats, steering wheel adjustment, paddle shifters and driver's seat memory. Semi-aniline leather upholstery will also be available on select versions.

Rear passengers get USB-C ports, a dedicated climate control panel, tray tables, map pockets and a fold-down armrest with cupholders.
The SUV will also feature a 12-speaker Dynamic Sound Yamaha Ultimate audio system with two amplifiers. Active noise compensation and additional cabin insulation are designed to reduce road and wind noise.

At launch, the Pajero will be offered only with a diesel engine. It uses a 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel unit, but unlike the Triton's twin-turbo setup, the Pajero uses a single turbocharger.
The engine produces up to 480Nm of torque, with select versions developing 470 Nm. Power output remains unchanged compared with the Triton.
The engine is paired with a new-generation eight-speed automatic gearbox, replacing the Triton's six-speed automatic transmission.
The new Pajero gets Mitsubishi's Super-Select 4WD-II system with 2H, 4H, 4HLc and 4LLc modes. It also features Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC), which can distribute torque between the front and rear axles and use torque vectoring and brake control to improve traction and stability.
For different driving conditions, the SUV gets seven drive modes: Eco, Normal, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand and Rock.
With its new ladder-frame construction, dedicated suspension setup and advanced four-wheel-drive system, the fifth-generation Pajero is positioned as a significantly more rugged SUV than its predecessor.
