2026 Toyota Hilux Launched in India: 5 Key Highlights

Toyota has launched the all-new Hilux in India at a starting price of Rs 31.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Rather than making drastic mechanical changes, the Japanese carmaker has focused on improving the pickup's comfort, technology and premium appeal. While the Hilux continues to offer the rugged capability it is known for globally, the latest update aims to make it a more practical and desirable lifestyle vehicle for everyday use.
Here are the five biggest highlights of the new Toyota Hilux.

Premium Cabin Gets a Major Upgrade

The biggest improvement comes inside the cabin. The previous Hilux offered a functional interior, but it lacked the premium feel expected in this price range.
Toyota has addressed this with a redesigned dashboard, a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a new 7-inch digital combination meter, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Toyota i-Connect connected car technology, ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, wireless charging, USB Type-C charging ports and a new black-themed cabin.
These updates make the Hilux feel far more modern and upmarket than before.

Proven Diesel Engine and Off-Road Hardware Continue

Mechanically, the Hilux remains unchanged. It continues to be powered by the trusted 2.8-litre diesel engine producing 204 bhp and 500 Nm of torque.
The engine is paired exclusively with a 6-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel-drive system featuring a low-range transfer case, electronic differential lock, Active Traction Control, Downhill Assist Control and Multi-Terrain Select.
The pickup also retains its impressive 700 mm water-wading capability, making it one of the most capable off-road vehicles on sale in India.

Manual Gearbox Dropped

One of the biggest changes is the removal of the manual transmission option.
The Hilux is now available only with an automatic gearbox, reflecting Toyota's shift towards buyers looking for greater convenience and comfort. The move also strengthens the pickup's positioning as a premium lifestyle vehicle rather than a purely work-focused utility model.

More Comfortable for Everyday Driving

Toyota has added several features that improve the Hilux's daily usability.
New additions include a 360-degree camera, powered driver's seat, rear AC vents, powered tailgate lock, improved storage spaces and 60:40 split-folding rear seats. These upgrades make the pickup better suited for city commutes, highway journeys and family road trips without compromising its off-road credentials.

Still a Niche Lifestyle Pickup

Despite the comprehensive updates, the Hilux is unlikely to become a high-volume seller in India. Lifestyle pickup trucks remain a niche segment, and the Hilux continues to carry a premium price tag compared to similarly priced SUVs.
However, Toyota isn't chasing sales volumes with the Hilux. Instead, it serves as a halo product that highlights the brand's engineering expertise, legendary durability and off-road capability. With this update, Toyota has made the Hilux more appealing for buyers who want a vehicle that stands out from conventional premium SUVs while retaining its globally recognised toughness.
