BMW X5 LWB, iX5 LWB Unveiled in China: Check Range, Features and More

Production will occur in China, and both models will remain exclusive to that market, with no current plans for availability in India, despite potential future interest.

BMW X5 LWB, iX5 LWB Unveiled in China: Gets Bigger Cabin, 1,000 km Range

BMW has taken the wraps off the long-wheelbase (LWB) versions of the X5 and the all-electric iX5, giving its popular luxury SUVs a major boost in rear-seat comfort. Developed exclusively for the Chinese market, the stretched SUVs feature a longer wheelbase, a roomier second row, and updated technology, while retaining the familiar design and driving character of the standard models. However, BMW has confirmed that these models are currently not planned for markets outside China, including India.
Key Highlights:
  • BMW unveils long-wheelbase versions of the X5 and all-electric iX5 in China
  • Wheelbase stretched by 130 mm to offer significantly more rear-seat legroom
  • iX5 uses sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology with a claimed 1,000 km CLTC range
  • No plans to launch the X5 LWB and iX5 LWB in India for now
The biggest change is underneath the body. BMW has increased the wheelbase by 130mm, with most of the additional length dedicated to creating more legroom for rear-seat passengers.
Unlike many extended-wheelbase vehicles that also focus on practicality, BMW says the extra space has been designed primarily to improve passenger comfort rather than increase luggage capacity. The result is a cabin that is better suited for chauffeur-driven owners, a key preference among luxury car buyers in China.

Exterior Changes

On the outside, the X5 LWB and iX5 LWB remain instantly recognisable. The overall styling is nearly identical to the standard SUVs, although the stretched side profile makes the longer proportions noticeable.
BMW has also introduced new alloy wheel designs and a few market-specific styling touches to distinguish the China-exclusive models.
Production of both SUVs will take place at BMW Brilliance Automotive in China and they will be sold exclusively in that market.

Updated Cabin Gets Latest BMW Technology

The interior receives more than just additional space. BMW has equipped the SUVs with its latest infotainment system, a curved digital display, and updated connected-car features.
The larger rear cabin is the main highlight, offering passengers significantly more room to relax on long journeys.

Powertrains Remain Familiar

Mechanically, the X5 Long Wheelbase will continue with petrol engine options depending on the variant, while the iX5 remains a fully electric luxury SUV.
BMW has not shared complete technical specifications yet, but the company says both SUVs will deliver driving characteristics similar to their standard-wheelbase counterparts.
The all-electric iX5 is powered by BMW's sixth-generation eDrive technology and offers a claimed driving range of over 1,000 km under the CLTC test cycle. The focus of the long-wheelbase versions is on passenger comfort rather than higher performance.

Will the BMW X5 LWB Come to India?

For now, BMW has made it clear that the X5 LWB and iX5 LWB are exclusive to China, reflecting the strong demand for long-wheelbase luxury vehicles in the country.
There is no confirmation of an India launch. However, long-wheelbase luxury sedans such as the BMW 3 Series LWB and Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB have found strong demand in India. If customer interest in chauffeur-focused luxury SUVs continues to grow, BMW could consider extending its long-wheelbase SUV strategy to the Indian market in the future.
Until then, the standard BMW X5 will continue to serve as the brand's flagship midsize luxury SUV in India.
