What are some of the challenges faced by ADAS systems in India, and how do they differ from other markets?

ADAS systems in India face unique challenges due to the country's diverse traffic patterns, poorly marked roads, and mixed vehicle types. Unlike markets with well-defined road rules, Indian roads often have unpredictable elements such as pedestrians and two-wheelers, which can hinder the effectiveness of ADAS technologies.

Safety features have become a necessity more than a possible add-on for Indian customers. Safety features including advanced driver assisted system (ADAS) and airbags have grown to prominence.
“We have been in the Indian automotive market for approximately four decades. Maruti Suzuki was here when the ecosystem was nascent and knowing the customers for such a long time, we’ve learnt crucial lessons over the years. The vehicle in India is used as a family car, which is different from other markets. Safety features like tracking and geofencing have been integrated, making it a peace of mind feature,” Agarwal stated.
Additionally, ADAS has emerged as one of the crucial points when it comes to making a car purchase for customers. Velusamy R stated that customers have started questioning the absence of ADAS on certain models. “We started a survey and found that 91% of customers have kept ADAS active,” Velusamy added.
Furthermore, the customers have asked for visual cues in place of audio cues, indicating the proximity of vehicles with three different colours.
The intention of the automakers is to holistically save lives; however, the addition of technology should be coupled with educating customers to use the features that are already present in the vehicle, Agarwal concluded.
