The Toyota Hilux achieved a five-star safety rating from ANCAP, applicable to most variants sold in Australia and New Zealand, excluding the Rugged X. This rating is valid until December 2031 and complements previous accolades from Latin NCAP and ASEAN NCAP. The Hilux features standard safety systems, including multiple airbags and Toyota Safety Sense technologies like autonomous emergency braking. In various crash tests, it demonstrated strong performance in adult and child occupant protection, while also scoring well in vulnerable road user protection and safety assist features.

Latest Toyota Hilux Achieves Maximum 5-Star ANCAP Safety Rating
The latest iteration of the Toyota Hilux has secured a five-star safety rating in the most recent crash tests conducted by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). The rating is applicable to all Hilux variants sold in Australia and New Zealand, with the exception of the Hilux Rugged X. The certification will remain valid until December 2031.
The ANCAP result adds to the Hilux’s earlier five-star ratings from Latin NCAP and ASEAN NCAP. The tested range includes single-cab and dual-cab variants powered by the 2.8-litre diesel engine, including versions equipped with a 48V mild-hybrid system.
Standard Safety Features
In Australia and New Zealand, the Toyota Hilux is offered with a set of standard safety features across the range. These include dual front airbags, side chest and side head airbags, a driver knee airbag and a centre airbag designed to reduce contact between front occupants during side impacts.
The pickup is also equipped with Toyota Safety Sense, which includes autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with support for car-to-car, pedestrian, cyclist, motorcyclist, junction, crossing, backover and head-on scenarios. Other systems include lane keep assist, lane departure warning, emergency lane keeping and an advanced speed assistance system that can recognise speed limit signs.
Adult Occupant Protection
In the Adult Occupant Protection category, the Hilux scored 33.96 points out of a possible 40, translating to 84 percent. ANCAP observed that the passenger compartment remained stable during the frontal offset (MPDB) test. Protection for most body regions of both the driver and front passenger was rated as Good or Adequate.
In the side impact test, protection for all critical body regions of the driver was rated Good, resulting in full points. During the oblique pole test, the driver’s chest protection was rated Adequate, while other body regions were rated Good. ANCAP applied an eight-point penalty after noting that the Hilux’s front structure posed a higher risk to occupants of an oncoming vehicle in the MPDB assessment.
Child Occupant Protection
The Hilux recorded 44.00 points out of 49 in Child Occupant Protection, equivalent to 89 percent. Protection for six-year-old and ten-year-old child dummies was rated Good in both frontal offset and side impact tests.
Dual-cab variants are fitted with ISOFIX anchorages and top tether points on the rear outboard seats and achieve full marks for ease of installation and compatibility with commonly available child seats. ANCAP however, cited that for the rear centre seat, the installation of child restraint is not recommended due to the absence of a top anchorage point. The single-cab variants of the Hilux do not offer top tether points, limiting child seat installation. A child presence detection system is standard on rear seats in dual-cab models but is not available on single-cab versions.
Vulnerable Road User Protection & Safety Assist
In the Vulnerable Road User Protection category, the Hilux scored 52.16 points out of 63, or 82 percent. Pedestrian impact testing showed Good to Adequate protection across most of the bonnet and windscreen area, while areas near the windscreen pillars and the front edge of the bonnet recorded Poor protection. Protection for the pelvis, femurs and lower legs of pedestrians was rated Good.
The AEB system demonstrated effective performance in detecting pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, avoiding or reducing the severity of impacts in most scenarios. The Hilux also recorded strong results in cyclist anti-dooring tests.
Under Safety Assist, the pickup scored 14.83 points out of 18, equating to 82 percent. ANCAP noted Good performance for AEB Car-to-Car, AEB Crossing and AEB Head-On functions, along with consistent operation of the lane support system, speed assistance, adaptive cruise control, seatbelt reminders with occupancy detection and driver drowsiness monitoring.
