Mercedes-AMG Teases New Electric SUV with GT-Inspired Design
The teaser images depict a sporty and muscular SUV with aggressive styling and familiar AMG elements. This SUV represents a significant expansion of AMG's electric lineup.
Mercedes-AMG Teases New Electric SUV with GT-Inspired Design
Mercedes-AMG is preparing to expand its electric performance lineup with a new high-performance SUV, and the German automaker has now given us the first official glimpse of the upcoming model. Teased through dark images on AMG’s social media channels, the new electric SUV appears to take design inspiration from the upcoming GT 4-Door Coupe while following the brand’s new AMG.EA electric vehicle strategy.
Unlike a conventional family SUV, the upcoming model appears to have a much sportier stance, muscular bodywork and styling cues borrowed from AMG’s performance cars. While Mercedes-AMG has not revealed its name, specifications or launch timeline yet, the teaser offers several clues about what could become one of the brand’s flagship electric SUVs.
Key Highlights:
- Mercedes-AMG has officially teased a new all-electric performance SUV.
- The SUV gets GT-inspired styling with muscular bodywork and large wheel arches.
- It is expected to use the new AMG.EA dedicated electric architecture.
- Power, range, name and launch date are yet to be revealed.
Mercedes-AMG Electric SUV: Design
Mercedes-AMG Electric SUV: Design
The teaser images show a low-slung SUV with a sporty silhouette rather than the upright proportions normally associated with traditional SUVs. The front-end design features LED daytime running lights that frame the nose, while the sculpted bonnet and prominent wheel arches give the SUV a wide and aggressive stance.
The grille area also appears to feature AMG-inspired vertical elements, indicating that Mercedes-AMG intends to retain familiar design cues as it moves deeper into the electric vehicle segment.
The rear design provides one of the strongest links to the upcoming electric GT 4-Door Coupe. The SUV gets circular LED tail-lights with a distinctive three-pointed-star-style lighting signature. While the design has been simplified, the overall treatment appears closely related to the GT 4-Door EV.
The proportions and roofline also appear similar to earlier camouflaged prototypes of an AMG electric SUV that have been spotted during testing.
New AMG SUV to Use Dedicated Electric Platform
New AMG SUV to Use Dedicated Electric Platform
The upcoming SUV will arrive as Mercedes-AMG expands its new AMG.EA electric architecture. The dedicated performance EV platform is being developed specifically for AMG models rather than adapting existing combustion-engine platforms for electric power.
The upcoming AMG GT 53 4-Door electric coupe is among the first models associated with this new electric direction. It is expected to use an 800-volt electrical architecture and a large battery pack, with performance-focused hardware designed to deliver the kind of performance AMG customers expect.
The new SUV is therefore expected to share technology and engineering philosophy with the electric GT rather than simply being an electric version of the existing GLC or GLE.
More Electric AMG Models on the Way
Mercedes-AMG has been steadily increasing its focus on dedicated electric performance vehicles. The Concept AMG GT XX and the upcoming electric GT 4-Door Coupe have already provided a glimpse into the company's future EV strategy.
The new SUV appears to be another major step in this direction. Instead of replacing AMG's existing plug-in hybrid models immediately, it will likely sit alongside them as the brand gradually expands its dedicated electric portfolio.
The existing AMG GLC 63 S E Performance, for example, combines a petrol engine with electric assistance, while the new SUV is expected to be a pure electric model from the outset.
Power, Range and Launch Details Yet to Be Revealed
Mercedes-AMG has not revealed the SUV's final name, power output, battery capacity, driving range or performance figures. The company has also not confirmed when the production version will be launched.
However, the teaser makes the positioning of the model clear. It will be a high-performance electric SUV positioned closer to AMG's dedicated electric GT models than conventional Mercedes-Benz SUVs.
The electric GT 53 4-Door Coupe is expected to reach customers before the new SUV, while Mercedes-AMG is also working on other dedicated electric models, including a future performance sedan.
With the new teaser, AMG has confirmed that its electric performance ambitions will extend beyond sedans and coupes. The upcoming SUV could become one of the most important additions to the AMG.EA family as Mercedes-AMG moves towards a broader range of dedicated performance EVs.
