Mutares To Acquire Continental’s Drum Brake Facility In Italy
Mutares SE & Co. KGaA has signed an agreement to acquire Continental’s drum brake manufacturing and R&D site in Cairo Montenotte, Savona, Italy. The agreement covers the full transfer of operations and approximately 400 employees.
Site Operations and Product Output
The site focuses on the production of hydraulic drum brakes. Products include the Parking Brake for Simplex Brakes (EPB-Si) and the Drum Brake (Si). The facility is projected to generate EUR 100 million in revenue in 2025.
Expected Timeline and Company Changes
The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025, after the planned listing of Continental’s Automotive group sector as an independent company named Aumovio. Continental aims to adjust its European manufacturing setup and focus resources on core product areas.
Impact on Mutares Operations
The acquisition will become part of Mutares’ Automotive & Mobility segment. It fits into the company’s ongoing strategy of expanding its holdings in the transport and components sector.
Philipp von Hirschheydt, member of the Continental Executive Board and CEO of the future Aumovio, commented: “We are confident that Mutares, with its extensive experience in the automotive business, is the right owner to lead this site into the future. Our shared goal is to ensure continuity for employees, customers and partners while securing long-term prospects for the Cairo Montenotte location. With this agreement, we further consolidate our European manufacturing footprint. Moreover, it marks an important step in our strategy in Europe to better allocate R&D and investments with our product strategy and future technologies, such as electric braking or integrated friction solutions. The transaction deal follows Automotive’s strategy to sharpen our focus on our core business and streamline our business operations.”
