Triumph Thruxton400, Speed 400, Speed T4, Scrambler 400X Prices Remains the Same Despite GST Rate Hike
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) on motorcycles above 350cc was recently revised upward, from 28% to 40%. This change has led to higher ex-showroom prices for several models across the two-wheeler industry.
Triumph’s 400cc Range
Triumph Motorcycles announced that its 400cc models: the Speed 400, Speed T4, Scrambler 400X and the newly launched Thruxton 400 will continue to be sold at their existing ex-showroom prices. The company, along with its manufacturing partner Bajaj Auto, has chosen to absorb the higher tax burden.
Market Context
The mid-capacity motorcycle segment in India has been expanding steadily. Triumph’s 400cc line-up has built a presence in this category since its introduction, targeting riders looking for motorcycles in the 400cc range. By maintaining prices, Triumph and Bajaj aim to retain competitiveness in this segment despite the tax increase.
Management Viewpoint
Manik Nangia, President Probiking, Bajaj Auto Ltd said, “The Triumph 400 cc platform has set new benchmarks in performance, design, and value. Even with the GST increase, we wanted to ensure that riding enthusiasts are not discouraged by higher costs. By holding prices steady, Triumph and Bajaj Auto are taking this step in the interest of customers, reaffirming our commitment to growing the Triumph brand in India.”
Industry Significance
This step highlights a different approach from Triumph and Bajaj compared to several other manufacturers, who are expected to pass on the revised tax impact to customers. By keeping prices steady, the companies are looking to maintain demand for their 400cc models in India’s growing motorcycle market.
