Volkswagen is preparing to enter one of India’s most competitive passenger vehicle segments with a new sub-4 metre compact SUV. The German carmaker has confirmed that the all-new model will be launched in India in 2027.
Key Highlights:
  • Volkswagen will launch a new sub-4 metre compact SUV in India in 2027
  • The SUV will be based on the India-specific MQB-A0-IN platform
  • It will become Volkswagen’s most affordable model in the country
  • High localisation and India-specific engineering will be key focus areas
The upcoming SUV will sit below Volkswagen’s existing SUVs in terms of size and price, and is expected to become the brand’s most accessible model in India. The company says the new model has been developed with a focus on Indian customer preferences, high localisation and lower ownership costs.

New Volkswagen SUV to Use MQB-A0-IN Platform

The upcoming compact SUV will be built on Volkswagen’s MQB-A0-IN platform, which was developed specifically for the Indian market. The architecture is already used for several Volkswagen and Skoda models sold in the country.
The platform was co-developed by Volkswagen’s engineering teams in India and Europe. It has been designed to support high levels of local content while keeping production costs and development timelines in check.
Volkswagen says the platform will also allow the new SUV to use efficient powertrains and modern safety and technology features suited to Indian regulations.

Focus on Safety and Localisation

Volkswagen is positioning the new SUV around its traditional focus on safety, build quality and engineering. The company says the model will be engineered to meet the requirements of Indian customers while retaining Volkswagen’s core product characteristics.
High localisation is expected to play an important role in keeping costs competitive in the sub-4 metre segment. The platform is also designed to support lower cost of ownership and efficient production.

Volkswagen Targets India's Biggest SUV Segment

The sub-4 metre SUV segment is among the most competitive parts of India's passenger vehicle market, with models such as the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Kia Sonet and Mahindra XUV 3XO competing for buyers.
Volkswagen has not yet revealed the name, engine options, features or pricing of its upcoming SUV. More details are expected to be announced closer to its 2027 launch.
