In a recent update it has come to light that Swedish automaker Volvo is planning to replace its EX40 electric SUV with the EX50 in 2027. According to multiple media reports Volvo is reportedly developing a new electric SUV called the EX50. The reports highlight that the EX50 could replace the EX40 in the company's global line-up from 2027.
The EX50 has not been officially confirmed by Volvo yet. However, multiple reports suggest that the new electric SUV could enter production in 2027 and become an important model in Volvo's next generation of electric vehicles. The upcoming model is expected to be longer and taller than the EX40 while using Volvo's newer SPA3 electric vehicle architecture. It is also expected to be positioned as a more affordable model than the larger EX60.

Volvo EX50: What To Expect?

The Volvo EX50 is expected to sit between the EX30 and EX60 in the brand's electric SUV line-up. Unlike the EX40, which is based on Volvo's CMA platform, the new model is reportedly being developed on the SPA3 platform. The architecture was introduced with the Volvo EX60 and its modular build is expected to allow Volvo to use the same basic architecture across different vehicle sizes and body styles. The EX50 is also expected to be larger than the EX40 offering better cabin and luggage space.
Technical specifications of the EX50 have not been announced. However, the model's reported use of the SPA3 platform means it could adopt powertrain technology similar to that used by the EX60. The EX60 offers single and dual-motor configurations, including a rear-wheel-drive version producing up to 369bhp and an all-wheel-drive version with significantly higher output. The EX50 could therefore be offered with both single- and dual-motor configurations, depending on the market. Battery capacity, range and charging specifications are yet to be confirmed.
The reported increase in length and height should give the EX50 a larger cabin than the EX40. This could result in additional rear-seat space and greater luggage capacity, making the upcoming SUV more suitable for buyers looking for a family-oriented electric vehicle. It could also get a three-row layout.
Notable features of the upcoming EX50 can include Volvo's connected technology package, including Google Maps, Google Assistant and Google Play, along with features such as a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, Pilot Assist, Pixel LED headlights and wireless smartphone charging on higher variants.

Volvo EX50: Will it Come to India?

The Volvo EX40 has already been delisted from Volvo's website in India. The EX40 was originally introduced in India as the XC40 Recharge, before Volvo adopted its revised naming system for electric vehicles. However, there is currently no confirmation from Volvo Cars India regarding the EX50's launch in India. The model itself is yet to be officially unveiled, so details about its India-specification powertrain, battery, features and pricing are not available. However, the EX50 could eventually make it to the Indian market positioned in the Rs 50 to Rs 55 lakh price range.
