BMW Recalls Over 4,300 Vehicles Due To Risk Of Engine Stalling And Fire
BMW North America has issued a voluntary safety recall for 4,397 vehicles from its 2025 model year lineup due to a possible manufacturing issue with the starter-generator.
The affected models include
- BMW 330i and 330i xDrive (approx. 1,076 units)
- BMW 530i and 530i xDrive (approx. 1,122 units)
- BMW 430i and 430i xDrive Coupe (approx. 234 units)
- BMW 430i and 430i xDrive Convertible (approx. 400 units)
- BMW 430i and 430i xDrive Gran Coupe (approx. 172 units)
- BMW X3 30 xDrive (approx. 1,393 units)
According to the report filled by BMW to NHTSA said, This safety recall involves the power connector component of the starter generator which may not have been produced by the supplier according to specifications. During the supplier production process, a gap could form at the connector location. If a gap exists, this could cause a loose connection between the connector and the positive battery cable (or wiring harness ). As a result, resistive heating could start to occur. This could result in a loss of charging function and engine stalling without warning, which could increase the risk of a crash. Also, over time, overheating could increase the risk of smoldering and in an extreme case, a fire.
The starter-generators in question were supplied by Shanghai Valeo Auto-Elec System Co. Ltd., located in China. Production dates of the affected vehicles range from October 2024 to March 2025.
The issue was first reported on December 12, 2024, following a field report outside the U.S. that noted a no-start condition and a burning smell. After additional field reports and investigations, BMW confirmed the problem and decided to initiate a recall on March 25, 2025. So far, there have been no reports of crashes or injuries linked to the defect.
To deal with the issue, BMW dealers will inspect the starter-generator and the battery cable. Depending on the findings, they will either replace or inspect both components free of charge. Vehicles already repaired under warranty for this issue do not require reimbursement, as repairs would have been covered under BMW’s new vehicle warranty.
