Renault Unveils New 158 bhp Full Hybrid Powertrain For Captur And Symbioz

Renault has announced a new full hybrid powertrain for its Captur and Symbioz models. The 1.8L E-Tech system delivers 158 bhp and features a 1.4 kWh battery. The brand also confirmed the introduction of a 138 bhp mild hybrid version for the Symbioz. Orders for the new variants opened on May 6, with deliveries set to begin in early July 2025. With the new hybrid system, the towing capacity for both Captur and Symbioz has increased from 750 kg to 1,000 kg.

Powertrain Details

The new full hybrid setup combines a 1.8L petrol engine that puts out 107 bhp with two electric motors a 36 kW motor and a 15 kW high-voltage starter generator. It uses a 1.4 kWh battery and a clutchless dog box transmission. This architecture increases combined power output and allows the vehicle to operate in electric mode for urban driving.

Performance and Efficiency

The updated system delivers a 25% increase in engine torque 172 Nm, which helps both Captur and Symbioz improve acceleration times. Captur now accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in 8.9 seconds, while Symbioz takes 9.1 seconds. Fuel consumption is rated at 4.3 litres per 100 km, with CO2 emissions at 98 g/km for Symbioz and 99 g/km for Captur.

Battery and Regeneration

The battery capacity has increased to 1.4 kWh from the earlier 1.2 kWh version. This allows more time in electric driving mode and better energy recovery through braking and deceleration. The system remains self-charging.

Transmission and Gear Shift

The clutchless dog box transmission remains in use, refined for smoother gear changes and reduced mechanical complexity. An electronic gear selector is now included for more accurate gear engagement.

Mild Hybrid Option for Symbioz

Renault is also introducing a 138 bhp mild hybrid powertrain for the Symbioz. It is based on a 1.3L turbocharged petrol engine and is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The system includes a 12V lithium-ion battery and a starter-alternator. Torque is rated at 260 Nm between 1,750 and 3,500 rpm, with fuel consumption at 5.9 litres per 100 km and CO2 emissions from 134 g/km.

Market Position and Hybrid Adoption

Since launching its E-Tech full hybrid system in 2021, Renault has sold over 750,000 vehicles with this technology. The brand currently holds the second position in full hybrid sales in Europe.
