Rimac Develops Hybrid Powertrain & Battery Tech For Bugatti Tourbillon
Rimac Technology has engineered the hybrid powertrain and battery for the upcoming Bugatti Tourbillon, set for delivery in 2026 with a limited run of 250 units. The hybrid system combines an 8.3L V16 engine with three electric motors, producing 800 bhp and allowing for over 60 km of electric-only driving. The vehicle features a 25 kWh battery pack that also acts structurally, along with advanced thermal and control systems. Rimac's founder highlights the project as a testament to their innovative engineering capabilities.

Rimac Technology has developed and supplied the hybrid powertrain, battery pack, and electronic control units for the Bugatti Tourbillon. The system was created in coordination with Bugatti Rimac engineers. Bugatti will begin deliveries of the Tourbillon in 2026, with a planned production run of 250 units. The vehicle can cover over 60 km in electric-only mode. The electric motors support the engine during acceleration and reduce the need for extra components.
V16 Engine Combined With Electric Drive
The Tourbillon is powered by a hybrid system that includes an 8.3L V16 engine and three electric motors. Two motors are placed on the front axle, and one on the rear axle. Together, the motors deliver 800 bhp.
The hybrid system uses an 800V setup. The rear unit includes the V16 engine, electric motor, dual-clutch transmission, and torque-vectoring differential. This unit weighs 430 kg, which matches the weight of the previous model’s engine.
Battery Design Supports Structure
Rimac has supplied a 25 kWh T-shaped battery pack. It serves as both an energy source and a structural element. The pack contains over 1,500 cells immersed in oil and is managed by Rimac’s fifth-generation Battery Management System (BMS). The BMS was developed under ASIL D and ASPICE Level 2 standards.
Control Systems & Thermal Setup
Rimac developed silicon carbide inverters and accompanying software. The electric motors function as drive units, starter motors, and generators. This removes the need for a separate 12V system.
The Tourbillon also uses three control units built by Rimac. The company handled the vehicle’s thermal systems to maintain operating conditions for the battery and motors.
Management’s Viewpoint
Mate Rimac, Founder and President of the Rimac Group, CEO Bugatti Rimac and Rimac Technology, said, "The Bugatti Tourbillon project represents a perfect showcase of Rimac Technology's capabilities as a full-system integrator and technology provider. The fact that the Tourbillon, despite its complex hybrid architecture, weighs less than its predecessor is a testament to our commitment to pushing the envelope of possibility in every project.”
