Audi Commences Production Of EVs At Its Changchun Facility In China

Audi and FAW have started production of electric vehicles at a new facility in Changchun, China. Operated by Audi FAW NEV Company, the plant is the first in China dedicated to producing fully electric Audi models based on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture. Initial production includes the Audi Q6L e-tron and Q6L Sportback e-tron, followed by a China-specific version of the Audi A6 e-tron. The facility marks a step in Audi’s efforts to expand its electric vehicle offerings in China and align its production with local market requirements.

The Changchun plant includes a press shop, body shop, paint shop, and vehicle assembly line, along with facilities for high-voltage battery production. The site has an annual production capacity of more than 150,000 vehicles and is expected to create approximately 3,000 jobs.

The plant employs digital design and automation for production. Digital twinning and Building Information Modeling (BIM) were used during construction to align the digital model with real-world progress. A cloud-based IT solution is implemented to connect all manufacturing, logistics, and maintenance processes. Over 800 robots are deployed for automated operations in the body shop. The facility also uses automated systems for logistics, including a tall warehouse with storage and retrieval systems. Partnerships are in place to explore the application of robotics in production.

The Changchun plant follows Audi’s environmental program, aiming for net carbon neutrality. It uses renewable energy and biomass for its energy requirements. Solar panels are installed on site, and systems are in place for recycling wastewater and production waste. Rainwater collection, aluminum recycling, and water treatment systems are also operational. Landscaping efforts include planting local vegetation, creating wetlands, and providing habitats for birds and insects.

Audi FAW NEV Company has developed a localized supply chain strategy, with a significant percentage of suppliers located near the Changchun facility. An exclusive supplier park has been established to support production. A localization rate of around 90 percent is projected.

The Audi Q6L e-tron and Q6L Sportback e-tron are the first models produced at the plant. These vehicles feature a longer wheelbase and market-specific features for China. A variant of the Audi A6 e-tron is planned for future production.
