Numeros Motors And IIT Bhubaneswar Begin Joint Research On Rare Earth-Free EV Motors
Numeros Motors and IIT Bhubaneswar have started a two-year research project to develop electric vehicle motors that do not rely on rare earth materials. The effort aims to create low-cost and sustainable motor technologies suited for India's EV sector.
Numeros Motors And IIT Bhubaneswar Begin Joint Research On Rare Earth-Free EV Motors
Electric vehicle manufacturer Numeros Motors has partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar to work on motor technologies that do not use rare earth elements. The collaboration involves a two-year research programme focused on non-magnet or rare earth-free motor designs.
Focus on Local and Sustainable Solutions
The research will aim to reduce India’s dependence on imported rare earth materials, which are widely used in conventional electric motors. The project will explore alternative motor structures that can be manufactured using more accessible materials. The goal is to support the development of locally made electric vehicle components.
Combining Industry and Academic Expertise
The project will bring together IIT Bhubaneswar’s knowledge in electrical engineering with Numeros Motors’ experience in electric drivetrains. Researchers will work on identifying motor designs that can deliver performance without relying on rare minerals. The collaboration is part of a broader effort to support India’s clean mobility objectives through innovation in domestic manufacturing.
Prof. Shreepad Karmalkar, Director, IIT Bhubaneswar said: “Industry-Academia collaboration and entrepreneurship are among the primary focus areas of IIT Bhubaneswar. We are happy to collaborate with Numeros Motors in the field of Electric Vehicles with a vision to ensure sustainability.” He also highlighted the initiatives in the area of Electric Vehicles undertaken in the Research and Entrepreneurship Park of IIT Bhubaneswar.
Shared Efforts Towards Electric Mobility
The agreement was formalised during a signing event attended by members of both organisations. Both parties will jointly conduct research and testing over the two-year period. The outcome of the work may help shape future technologies for India’s electric vehicle market.
