Porsche Recalls Nearly 10,000 Taycan EVs Over Passenger Airbag Issue

Porsche Cars North America is recalling 9,735 units of the 2022–2023 Taycan due to a defect in the passenger seat that may prevent airbag deployment. The issue stems from a manufacturing error affecting the occupant classification system, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

Porsche Cars North America has issued a voluntary safety recall for 9,735 units of Taycan electric vehicles that were produced between January 13, 2022 to March 31, 2023 due to a defect in the passenger seat's airbag system.
According to the report filed by Porsche to NHTSA said, The occupant classification system for automatic airbag activation/ deactivation in the front passenger seat can trigger a fail-safe mode due to a manufacturing error, which deactivates the airbag in the front passenger seat.
In the event of a failure, if the activated airbag warning or “Passenger Airbag OFF” lamps are disregarded by the front passenger, and that individual does not move to a different seating position or exit the vehicle, the protective benefit of the front airbag system will not be available to the passenger in the event of a crash. This increases the risk of injury to the occupant seated in the front passenger seat in the event of a frontal crash at or above the airbag deployment threshold deceleration.
Porsche has traced the problem to a supplier, Lear Corporation Hungary, which provided the faulty seat components. The company confirmed that vehicles produced after March 2023 are not affected, as the manufacturing process has since been corrected.
To deal with the issue, Porsche will replace the affected seat cushion with an updated version that features an improved heat mat and a more secure crimp connection. All vehicles involved are still under warranty, and Porsche will begin notifying dealers by April 25, 2025. Vehicle owners are scheduled to receive recall notices starting June 6, 2025.
Owners are advised to check for warning lights on the dashboard and visit an authorized Porsche dealership for inspection if they suspect an issue. The recall does not include a reimbursement notice since the affected vehicles are still covered under warranty.
