Rivian Recalls Over 500 R1T And R1S Electric Vehicles Over Seat Belt Safety Issue

Rivian Automotive, has announced a voluntary safety recall for 536 electric vehicles, covering specific R1T and R1S models, due to a possible defect in the installation of the seat belt D-ring bolt on the front driver and/or passenger side.
The affected R1T trucks were produced between June 6, 2022, and April 10, 2025. The R1S SUVs included in the recall were manufactured from August 4, 2022, to March 19, 2025. Rivian identified the problem through warranty claims received in early 2025 and launched an internal investigation that confirmed the use of an alternate assembly process for some vehicles.
According to the report filled by Rivian to NHTSA, on certain R1T and R1S vehicles, the seat belt D-ring bolt for the front driver and/or passenger seat belt D-ring may not have been properly installed during the vehicle manufacturing process. This condition may decrease the strength of the bolt joint, causing inadequate attachment of the front seat belts during loading. An improperly secured seat belt anchor may not adequately restrain the seat occupant during a crash, increasing the risk of injury. The customer may experience a noticeable rattling noise from the D-ring area on the B pillar if the seat belt anchorage assembly is not properly secured to the height adjuster.
Although no injuries or accidents have been reported so far, Rivian has chosen to recall the affected units as a precaution. Owners may notice a rattling noise near the B pillar, which could indicate an improperly fastened seat belt.
To deal with the issue Rivian will inspect and if needed, properly secure the seat belt anchor bolts at no cost to customers. The recall is expected to begin on July 16, 2025. Rivian will contact owners directly, and the recall information will be available via the VIN search tool from the same date.
The affected vehicles are still under Rivian’s 8-year/100,000-mile warranty. Therefore, no reimbursement notices are required at this time, but Rivian has offered to cover past repair costs for this issue if owners provide proof of payment.
