Volkswagen To Reveal Three China-Specific EV Concepts At Auto Shanghai

Volkswagen will unveil three electric vehicle concept models at Auto Shanghai 2025, scheduled to take place from April 23 to May 2. The new models have been developed through its joint ventures in China as part of the company’s “In China, for China” strategy.

Models Developed with Local Partnerships

The concept vehicles include:
  • An electric notchback from FAW-Volkswagen
  • A B-segment electric SUV with range-extender technology from SAIC VOLKSWAGEN
  • A fully electric SUV from Volkswagen Anhui
All three vehicles will fall under the category of new energy vehicles (NEVs), which in China includes battery-electric, plug-in hybrid and range extender models.

More NEVs Expected Through 2027

Volkswagen has announced plans to introduce more than 20 NEV models in the Chinese market by 2027. These models are expected to offer various drivetrain technologies to match local consumer needs.

Focus on Faster Development

According to the company, development times for these concept models have been shortened by over 30 percent. The vehicles will reflect Volkswagen’s updated design and technology approach tailored for China.
Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, said, “Our ‘In China, for China’ strategy has put us on the right path. Our aim is to remain the leading international automaker in China – even in the age of the intelligent connected vehicle. We have everything that it takes to be successful: shorter development times, strong partners, sophisticated local development, production and infrastructure as well as the right products and innovations for our Chinese customers. That’s exactly what we will prove with our near-production concept cars in Shanghai.”
