Mahindra is preparing to update the Thar once again, less than a year after its 2025 update. The 2026 Mahindra Thar facelift has already been spotted testing on Indian roads, while the company has also released teasers ahead of its expected launch on September 22. The upcoming model is likely to get a refreshed exterior, more features and some cabin updates.
Key Highlights:
- New honeycomb-pattern grille and revised exterior styling
- Thar Roxx-inspired LED headlamps with C-shaped DRLs expected
- More features could include a 360-degree camera and digital driver’s display
- Existing petrol and diesel engine options are likely to continue
Mahindra Thar Facelift: Expected Exterior Changes
The biggest changes are expected on the outside. Teasers released by Mahindra show a new grille featuring a honeycomb pattern. The SUV could also get redesigned alloy wheels as part of the update.
Spy images of test vehicles suggest that the Thar facelift could borrow several styling elements from the Thar Roxx. These may include projector LED headlamps with C-shaped daytime running lights. Revised bumpers and updated detailing for the tail-lamps are also expected.
Mahindra Thar Facelift: Expected Interior and Features
The overall cabin layout is likely to remain similar to the current Thar. However, Mahindra could introduce leatherette seat upholstery and updated trim materials to give the interior a fresher look.
The 2025 update added features such as a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, rear AC vents, a rear wiper and washer, and a rearview camera. However, several features offered by rivals and newer SUVs were still missing.
The 2026 facelift could address some of these gaps. Expected additions include a digital driver’s display, 360-degree camera, ventilated front seats, wireless phone charger and automatic climate control.
Mahindra Thar Facelift: Engine and Gearbox
The 2026 Mahindra Thar facelift is expected to continue with the existing engine range. This includes a 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 119hp and 300Nm, a 2.2-litre diesel unit developing 132hp and 300Nm, and a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 152hp and 300Nm, with the automatic version offering 320Nm.
A 6-speed manual gearbox is expected to remain standard across the range. The 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engines are also offered with a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
The 1.5-litre diesel is available with rear-wheel drive, while the 2.2-litre diesel is offered with four-wheel drive. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine is available with both RWD and 4x4 configurations.
Mahindra Thar Facelift: Expected Price and Rivals
The facelift is expected to command a slight premium over the outgoing model. The current Mahindra Thar is priced from Rs 10.32 lakh to Rs 18 lakh (ex-showroom).
The updated Thar will continue to compete with the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Force Gurkha 3-door. More details on the facelift, including its exact price and variant-wise features, are expected to be announced at the launch on September 22.
